Trust is the glue that binds,
that finds and seals the gaps in us…
that peels away layers and repairs us!
Trust tares tears from broken souls,
moulds them anew through fire,
torment and lament, at times.
Trust forges catharsis stoked by bellows,
in eddies of grief that fuel
cycles of renewal.
Trust breeds the capacity to accept,
to let go of a net of ideas
untangle the mind of fears
to truly be free.
Trust opens doors,
trust ends wars,
in the labor of trust
love is born.
Trust builds bridges
over frigid gulfs of time.
Trust is the sublime rendering
of the unending dance to be free,
the purest expression
that fundamentally
there's no difference
in you and me.
Trust lives at the heart of the lotus -
between the flower's stamen and Bee.
Together they build the cornerstones of life,
an expression of eternal prescience,
whole ecosystems founded by plants with insects,
trust is as exquisite as the wave crest
that gleams in the shimmer of sunbow,
trust is at the heart of humankind's dreams,
it is the heart of what we all want to know.

This poem was written long ago, but has been through many edits and it has evolved with time to finally echo a truth that I think is eternal. Some people find it in religion, others in the simple act of letting go of ego - finding love and expressing it fully and truly.
The poem was born out of a fundamental truth in how I view the world; trust is a voluntary mingling of souls, it is when you find that perfect someone who you would die for, it is evident in the vast majority of parents (or at least the ones who remove their ego and preconceptions from raising their children) in offering unconditional love.
So what is Trust?
I have tried to answer that question in prose, but it will resonate in different ways for different people. I can only speak to my life experience, which hasn't been one filled with trustworthy people, especially in my early adult years. Despite this, I've found that there is a defining factor in how people trust. Most betrayals of trust come down to one, or both, persons viewing a relationship as a transaction rather than a sharing of spirit.
Many people are driven by their expectations of what they think someone else should/could be, and these expectations are informed by their own self-doubts or beliefs. The weight of a lifetime of neurosis can colour behaviour, turning the trust in adult relationships into a matter of transaction - what that person brings to 'the relationship'.
This is a broken way to trust!.
For me, it really does come down to these simple truths - in relationships where there is a sharing of spirit; trust is emotionally alive and healthy through the act of sharing. Some people may disagree, and say "you leave yourself vulnerable, and you'll be walked over and betrayed endlessly." To this I'd simply answer, “I don't care as finding real unconditional love is worth a thousand betrayals. Also, I figured out how to analyze and spot narcissists, sociopaths and people with over-extended egos, by my early thirties. These people don't bother me when I meet them, but they don't get one iota of my trust, there are ways to identify the arseholes that live on this planet, giving them only what they deserve ✌️ two fingers and none of the energy they so desperately crave.
The most obvious example of unconditional love/trust is that between parents and their children. But this isn't the only unconditional love/trust I've experienced in my life, sometimes we meet people, either friends or lovers, who transcend the ego's expectations and labelling, finding that unconditional love/trust once again. I'd argue that when this happens is when we feel true love. This has only happened to me a handful of times so far in my life, one is my parent, one is deeply damaged (in a mental health facility), another is dead, and I miss those from that group who I can no longer spend time with every day, the other is my current partner/girlfriend.
