Some people believe in fate while some don't. Some believe things will happen if we just let nature have its way. Some believe they can design their destiny just the way they want while some believe whatever is designed in one's destiny by the creator is what will happen in one's journey in life. Sometimes, we humans lose patience, forgetting that there are some things written in our fates that can never be changed.
My cousin Seun had always wanted to be a nurse. Right from childhood, anytime there was a career day at her school, she would insist on dressing as a nurse so her mum could get her nursing toy kits that she could take pictures with. When she graduated from junior secondary school, with no doubt, we knew she would be going for science in her senior secondary level and that was what she did. Despite being a science student, she drew so well. Anytime she was given a diagram in biology, she always drew it to perfection and I often tease her to go for architecture instead of nursing.
"Madam, you're in the wrong class", I'll say.
"I'm a nurse in the making, don't discourage me big sis", she'd reply.
I noticed she was so keen about becoming a nurse, but another side of her was still more visible than the nursing desire but then I never wanted to discourage her. She graduated from secondary school and started pursuing admission into nursing schools. Despite being intelligent, she was rejected from three different nursing schools. We kept asking ourselves the reasons behind her rejection, but none of us had perfect answers for it.
Her mum advised her that since nursing isn't visible, she should try another science course, which she did by writing JAMB the following year. Unfortunately, she wasn't given the course she wanted, which was biochemistry. She was given agriculture. Seun rejected the admission because she didn't want to go for the course she was given.
"Why don't you try architecture since you're good at drawing and art?" I said to her one day during a conversation with her and her mother.
"What if it's not written in fate for you to be a nurse? Or don't you see it that way? You're gifted, my dear, why don't you make use of it rather than struggling to study nursing?" I said.
At that time, my advice seems bad, but what if that was what was written in the stars? After so many thoughts, her parents persuaded her and she sat for another secondary school leaving certificate examination as an art student. Put in for another jamb, choosing architecture as her preferred course, and luckily, she got admission for that same course. She's now a first-class graduate, presently pursuing her master's degree.
Thanks for your time and your comments will be appreciated.
