🦉 The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)

  • Dendrocopos Greek: dendron tree, coptō to hit, beat
  • major (lat.) big

The most recognizable and most numerous species of woodpeckers. You can meet it at any time of the year and in any forest. Males have a small red spot on their heads, females do not. It is interesting that the young have this cap on their entire heads, which makes them look like white-backed woodpeckers.

I noticed that in the spring they seem to prefer to examine the trees from the lower tiers, while in the summer and autumn they prefer to climb higher. By the way, it is very interesting to watch how woodpeckers make "forges" in the fall. This is a hole that they hollow out in the bark of a tree so that they can then conveniently place a pine cone there and peck out seeds.
