🦉 The brambling (Fringilla montifringilla)
- Fringilla (lat.) Finch; fi nco (old German)
- montifringilla lat .: mōns, montis mountain, mountain range
This bird is slightly larger than its closest relative, the chaffinch. In spring, the male has a black head, back, wings, and tail. In autumn, the coloring is brownish. The female is grayish-brown, ochre. They appear in the forests around my city around early April, and occasionally in late March, depending on the weather. But the strange thing is, they only appear for a short time; after mating season, they fly away. However, in the summer, I see them regularly in the pine forest outside the city.
These birds can hardly be called good singers; their repertoire consists of short chirps and buzzing songs. They feed primarily on plant matter, seeds, and berries, but in spring and summer they eat insects.
