🦉 The black kite (Milvus migrans)
- Milvus (lat) - kite
- migrans (lat.) - migrating
Kites can soar for long periods without flapping their wings, which suits their nature perfectly: they're slow and don't like to make unnecessary movements. This has earned them the nickname "lazy predators." They can hunt small rodents, lizards, fish, nestlings, and eggs, but why bother when you can just steal scraps of food from the trash?
These birds have a very interesting way of displaying their rank and status. They often decorate their nests with various objects, preferring scraps of white bags. The stronger the birds, the more vibrantly decorated their nests. The more vibrantly decorated a nest is, the more vigorously rival nestmates attack it.
