🦉 The common starling or European starling (Sturnus vulgaris)

  • Sturnus lat.: sturnus starling, sturninus speckled, spotted
  • vulgaris (lat.) well-known, ordinary

This bird is a real mystery to me. For some reason, I only see them in the spring, in small numbers, even though they're known for living in huge flocks. After summer, I see them extremely rarely, and only in small groups most likely a family flock.

Starlings are omnivorous. In the spring, I've seen them running along the ground, collecting worms and grubs from underground. In the summer, they eat almost any insect and spider. When fruits and berries ripen, they eat them too, not only in forests but also in people's gardens and vegetable plots, causing damage to crops.
