🦉 The common merganser (North American) or goosander (Mergus merganser)

> - Mergus (Greek) unidentified waterfowl mentioned in the texts of Pliny, Horace, and other ancient Roman authors

> - merganser Greek: Mergus-Waterfowl, Anser-Goose

This is a large duck with a long bill with a small hook at the end. Males have a dark green head and a blackish-gray neck and back. Females have a reddish head and a gray back. They also have a small crest on the back of their heads.

These ducks usually live in places with quiet rivers and lakes of the northern taiga, where there is plenty of fish.

It arrives early, I took these pictures in mid-April, and as you can see, the snow on the river hasn’t even melted yet.
