I have goose bumps just from thinking about this movie. It is that good. And insightful. Think of this movie as a free therapy session, you are probably going to leave it with an insight or two about yourself. If you are struggling mentally like me, than this movie will hit hard. I had the feels.
Meet the Thunderbolts a new team of Marvel misfits and ex-villains. Florence Pugh returns as the beloved Yelena Belova, our new Black Widow. Her life feels even emptier now that her beloved sister is gone and work just doesn't fulfil her anymore, so it is time for a change. I don't think that this is the change she expected.
Her adoptive father Alexei Shostakov or Red Guardian, played by David Harbour, is not helpful. Despite their reconnecting during the Black Widow movie it seems that this relationship did not advance and Alexei keeps failing his daughter.
Sebastian Stan returns as Bucky Barnes or the Winter Soldier. He is the only one who has his life put together and he is now a congress man. Wyatt Russell returns as John Walker or U.S. Agent or fake Captain America and manages to redeem his awful character. Hannah John-Kamen returns as Ghost and doesn't leave a big impression.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine really does leave an impression. Boy did Julia Louis-Dreyfus came far from her days as Elaine on "Seinfeld" and other sitcoms. She is now a new big villain and she does a fantastic job at it. She has a mean and evil plan that our heroes or more correctly anti-heroes have to stop. Mostly if they want to stay alive, but not only.
Then we have our new favorite mystery character "Bob" played by Lewis Pullman. He also played Bob in "Top Gun: Maverick" which is a bit funny. His mystery character is one of the best. I was really disappointed when his mystery character got revealed online. It's too bad because it is a really good plot twist. I loved his character and the way he portrayed it.
I think the trailer ruined the movie a bit. Too many of the action scenes and surprises were in the trailer itself and didn't it leave much room for surprises.
As much as the movie is low on action, it is high on emotional impact in my opinion. Especially Bob and Yelena have the best emotional arcs I've encountered recently. I feel like I've actually learned important life lessons through this movie. And don't forget that your mental health matters.
I highly recommend this movie. It's not fun exactly, it's dark and depression actually, but it is a really good movie. A different, but excellent Marvel movie.
