Hoy les quiero compartir en el post de hoy, otra ilustración sobre la historia OCxCanon para las actividades del grupo de Selfshipping con la pareja Ylia x Pete Richardson del anime Daiku Maryu Gaiking.
Ya sabemos que el Capitán Pete es bastante estricto y demandante cuando se trata de trabajo. Debido a esto, siempre tiene inconvenientes con Brando quien lo ve como una persona amargada e insoportable.
Sin embargo, Pete se ve más relajado y como un joven normal de su edad, cuando comparte con sus compañeros en sus ratos libres y no lleva puesto el uniforme. Incluso se le ve reír y es bastante comprensivo. Pareciera que en esos momentos, deja completamente de lado el orden y la disciplina.
Ylia está en su fase de adaptación no sólo al ambiente de trabajo, a sus compañeros, sino también al clima.
Siendo latina, está más acostumbrada a temperaturas cálidas. A excepción de algunos países de América, la mayoría no tiene temperaturas frías tan intensas como los inviernos y otoños en Japón.
Un día, mientras salen a caminar por la playa después de un duro combate durante una noche de otoño, Ylia comienza a sentir el frío de la noche. Piensa que puede aguantar la temperatura y disimula bastante bien. Sin embargo, a medida que van pasando el tiempo, siente que está siendo cada vez más difícil mantener la apariencia.
No quiere dejar pasar la oportunidad de conversar con Pete tratando de ganar su amistad. Ha sido bastante duro poder entablar una conversación fluida con él más allá de las órdenes e instrucciones durante su día a día como aprendiz de piloto de pruebas. Así que, por el bien de la relación de trabajo, decide soportar el frío estoicamente.
Se detienen un momento a observar el mar. Y cuando Ylia piensa que la brisa le está congelando hasta los huesos, siente algo cálido alrededor de sus hombros. Voltea sorprendida para darse cuenta que Pete se ha quitado su sweater y se lo ha colocado para cubrirla al darse cuenta que estaba temblando. Para él es sólo una noche fresca, para ella, es como estar en el Polo Norte.
Con esta idea, ¡es hora de pasar las palabras a imagen!
Lo primero, fue definir la posición de los personajes y la pose. Ylia es bajita, así que había que buscar una postura que fuese adecuada tanto al tamaño de ambos personajes y que a la vez pudiera demostrar el frío que siente Ylia más su confusión y sorpresa con la acción inesperada por parte de Pete.
Definidas las poses, es momento de entrar en los detalles y definir a los personajes. Últimamente estoy haciendo los bocetos un poco definidos antes de hacer el lineart, saltándome el paso del lápiz para limpiar el boceto. Creo que he ido ganando confianza o tal vez, el hecho de trabajar el estilo de anime retro, me hace sentir que el lineart cubre el paso del lápiz.
El lineart, fue realizado con brochas de lápices. En este paso, me gustó como terminó quedando la expresión de Pete. Sigue luciendo serio pero su expresión tiene un ligero matiz más suave.
Para el color, usé una base gris oscura. Quería asegurarme que la camisa de Pete y la piel de Ylia, que es bastante pálida, quedaran completamente coloreados para que no lo afectara el fondo nocturno de la escena.
Al momento de trabajar el fondo, los azules en tonos oscuros ayudaron a crear el ambiente nocturno de la escena.
Agregué una capa para trabajar la iluminación y el Faro de Saratoga, donde se encuentra la base del Gran Dragón del Espacio.
El último paso fueron los efectos de iluminación: luna y estrellas para el cielo, luz brillante para el faro y el reflejo de la luz tras ellos al pasar el haz de luz. ¡Y así quedó!
Trabajar la historia de ellos a través de ilustraciones ha sido un gran ejercicio. Me saca de mi zona de confort y me permite experimentar con detalles propios combinados con el estilo del anime retro que tanto me gusta. Creo que es un estilo que no pasa de moda y sigue luciendo atractivo visualmente. Quiero tomar ciertos elementos de ese estilo e incorporarlos a un estilo más actual y ver qué tal quedan. Así que, estarán viendo más experimentos de este tipo en los próximos posts que comparta.

Today I want to share another illustration from the OCxCanon story for the Selfshipping group activities featuring the Ylia x Pete Richardson pairing from the anime Daiku Maryu Gaiking.
We already know Captain Pete is quite strict and demanding when it comes to work. Because of this, he’s always having issues with Brando, who sees him as a bitter, unbearable person.
However, Pete looks more relaxed and like a normal young man his age when he hangs out with his crewmates in his free time and isn’t wearing his uniform. You can even see him laugh and he’s quite understanding. It seems that in those moments he completely lets go of order and discipline.
Ylia is in her adaptation phase not only to the work environment and her crewmates but also to the climate.
Being Latina, she’s more accustomed to warm temperatures. Outside of some countries in the Americas, most places don’t experience winters and autumns as cold as those in Japan.
One day, while they’re walking on the beach after a tough battle on an autumn night, Ylia starts to feel the night chill. She thinks she can handle the temperature and hides it well. However, as time passes, she finds it increasingly difficult to keep up the appearance.
She doesn’t want to miss the chance to talk to Pete and try to win his friendship. It’s been hard to have a fluid conversation with him beyond orders and instructions during her daily life as a test pilot trainee. So, for the sake of their working relationship, she decides to endure the cold stoically.
They stop for a moment to watch the sea. When Ylia thinks the breeze is freezing her to the bone, she feels something warm around her shoulders. She turns in surprise to find Pete has taken off his sweater and placed it over her to cover her after noticing she was shivering. For him it’s just a cool night; for her, it’s like being at the North Pole.
With this idea, it’s time to turn words into images!
The first step was defining the characters’ positions and pose. Ylia is short, so I had to find a posture that suited both characters’ sizes while also conveying the cold Ylia feels plus her confusion and surprise at Pete’s unexpected action.
With the poses defined, it was time to move into details and finalize the characters. Lately I’ve been making sketches a bit more refined before doing the lineart, skipping the pencil-cleanup step. I think I’ve gained confidence, or perhaps working in the retro anime style makes me feel the lineart can replace the pencil stage.
I did the lineart with pencil brush tools. In this step I liked how Pete’s expression turned out. He still looks serious but his expression has a slightly softer nuance.
For color, I used a dark gray base. I wanted to make sure Pete’s shirt and Ylia’s very pale skin were fully colored so they wouldn’t be affected by the scene’s nighttime background.
When working on the background, the dark blues helped create the scene’s nighttime atmosphere.
I added a layer to work on the lighting and the Saratoga Lighthouse, where the Great Space Dragon base is located.
The final step was the lighting effects: moon and stars in the sky, a bright light for the lighthouse, and the light’s reflection behind them as the beam passed. And that’s how it turned out!
Working their story through illustrations has been a great exercise. It pushes me out of my comfort zone and lets me experiment with personal details combined with the retro anime style I love. I think it’s a style that never goes out of fashion and still looks visually appealing. I want to take certain elements of that style and incorporate them into a more modern look to see how they fit. So you’ll be seeing more experiments like this in upcoming posts I share.
