¡Hola tribu creativa y amante del anime y manga!
¡Feliz inicio de semana! Esta semana arrancó con mucha energía y muchas cosas por hacer de este lado. Y entre esas cosas, están algunos tutoriales que estoy preparando para compartir pronto con ustedes. Mientras tanto, quiero compartirles hoy un poquito más de la historia de Pete Richardson e Ylia, para las actividades OCxCanon del grupo de Selfshipping del que ya les he comentado en posts anteriores.
El Capitán Pete, suele ser bastante serio y estricto, manteniendo una pose muy profesional en la mayoría de las escenas. Llega a convertirse en algo muy propio de su personalidad el verlo con los brazos cruzados en el pecho o apoyadas en las caderas cuando algo le disgusta y por lo general mantiene el ceño fruncido. Eso enfatiza su caracter disciplinado y su alejamiento emocional con los demás.
Sin embargo, tiene sus momentos en los que baja las barreras un poco y está en contacto más amistoso con sus compañeros e incluso se le ve reír en algunas escenas. Y uno de esos momentos suele ser cuando está en el comedor, el cafetín u otra área de descanso dentro del Gran Dragón del Espacio.
Aparte de esto, el Capitán tiene un gusto por la arqueología que lo llevó en varias ocasiones a meterse en problemas sin querer. Uno de esos momentos tuvo que ver con la investigación de una isla que resultó ser el Imperio del Rugido, un lugar que Pete siempre quiso conocer desde que era niño.
Así que aproveché estos elementos para lograr que Ylia tenga en la trama de su historia con Pete, un punto de acceso a él a través de esa armadura impenetrable que el Capitán tiene puesta, repeliendo el acercamiento con los otros.
Ella encuentra un tema en común para conversar con el Capitán y acercarse poco a poco a él, no con intenciones románticas (al menos no al inicio), sino para ganar su amistad ya que ha sido difícil lograrlo y decide regalarle un libro relacionado a las Leyendas del Imperio del Rugido, escrito por un par de científicos de gran renombre en la comunidad de las ciencias y a los que Pete admira. Estos personajes tendrán más tarde cierta relevancia en los acontecimientos de la historia pero por el momento, son sólo referenciales.
Con esta parte de la historia desarrollada, quise hacer una ilustración sobre la escena de Ylia entregándole el libro.
Lo primero que hice fue el boceto con la posición de los personajes. La posición de Ylia tenía que reflejar informalidad. A pesar de ser su superior, Ylia quiere acercarse a Pete más que como a un superior por el cual siente admiración, como a un amigo con el cual podría aprender muchas cosas relacionadas a su carrera, por eso la mano de Ylia descansa sobre el espaldar del asiento de Pete. En cuanto a Pete, quería que reflejara sorpresa por el inesperado regalo y también apertura, por lo que sus manos no están tocándose en ningún momento.
Posterior a esto, comencé a definir a los personajes. Me enfoqué en sus expresiones para enfatizar el entusiasmo de Ylia en hacerle un regalo a Pete con sinceridad y el agrado y emoción de Pete al recibir algo que realmente le gusta. Al inicio, había pensado dejar la mano izquierda de Pete alejada o tal vez fuera de la imagen pero luego pensé que ponerla más cerca podría ayudar a enfatizar su disposición a permitir un acercamiento amistoso entre ellos.
Para el lineart, utilicé brochas de lápices y así darle el aspecto de anime retro. Intentaba que quedara lo más cercano posible al aspecto del anime.
En el paso del color, usé las paletas de tonos originales y opté por colores planos. En Gaiking, no se ven muchas sombras.
Y para la escenografía, me basé en unas tomas del cafetín. En este anime, los ambientes para el grupo de los buenos, tiene abundancia de colores fríos como el azul, verdes suaves y lilas mientras que en las escenas para los enemigos, los colores cálidos son los que prevalecen. Usé brochas de acuarelas y agregué un sombreado muy sutil para la mesa del cafetín.
Y este fue el resultado final:
Al inicio, pensé que usar colores planos iba a hacer la escena menos emotiva y simple, sin embargo me gustó mucho el resultado final. Tal vez intente hacer la misma escena con sombras para comparar aunque el uso de mayor cantidad de sombras en las escenas de anime es algo muy propio de los anime de los 90´s.

Happy start of the week! This week kicked off with lots of energy and many things to do on my end. Among those things are some tutorials I’m preparing to share with you soon. In the meantime, today I want to share a bit more of Pete Richardson and Ylia’s story for the OC×Canon activities of the Selfshipping group I’ve mentioned in previous posts.
Captain Pete is usually quite serious and strict, maintaining a very professional stance in most scenes. It has become a hallmark of his personality to see him with his arms crossed over his chest or resting on his hips when something displeases him, and he generally keeps a frown. That emphasizes his disciplined character and emotional distance from others.
However, he has moments when he lowers his guard a bit and interacts more amiably with his crew, and you even see him laugh in some scenes. One of those moments often happens when he’s in the mess hall, the café, or another resting area aboard the Great Space Dragon.
Besides this, the Captain has a taste for archaeology that got him into trouble on several occasions, one of those times involved investigating an island that turned out to be the Roaring Empire, a place Pete had wanted to visit since childhood.
I used these elements so Ylia would have an entry point into his impenetrable armor of formality, which repels others. She finds common ground to talk to the Captain and gradually approach him, not with romantic intentions (at least not at first), but to earn his friendship, since it’s been hard to do. She decides to give him a book about the Legends of the Roaring Empire, written by a pair of renowned scientists in that field whom Pete admires. These characters will later play a certain role in the story’s events, but for now, they’re just references.
With this part of the story developed, I wanted to illustrate the scene of Ylia handing him the book.
The first thing I did was sketch the characters’ poses. Ylia’s posture had to reflect casualness. Even though he’s her superior, Ylia wants to approach Pete more as a friend she can learn from in her career rather than just admire from afar, so her hand rests on the back of Pete’s seat. As for Pete, I wanted him to show surprise at the unexpected gift and also openness, so his hands never touch each other.
After that, I began defining the characters. I focused on their expressions to emphasize Ylia’s sincerity and enthusiasm in giving Pete a gift and Pete’s pleasure and excitement in receiving something he truly enjoys. At first, I’d thought of having Pete’s left hand kept away or even off-screen, but then I realized bringing it closer would underscore his willingness to accept a friendly approach.
For the line art, I used pencil brushes to give it that retro anime look, aiming to stay as close as possible to traditional frame-by-frame animation.
When coloring, I used the original tone palettes and opted for flat colors. In Gaiking, you don’t see many shadows.
For the background, I based it on café shots from the anime. In this show, the heroes’ spaces are rich in cool colors like blues, soft greens, and lilacs, while the villains’ scenes favor warm tones. I used watercolor brushes and added very subtle shading to the café table.
And this was the final result:
At first, I thought flat colors would make the scene feel less emotive and too simple, but I really liked the outcome. I might try the same scene with shadows for comparison, although heavy shading is more typical of ’90s anime.
