Hoy quiero compartirles un pequeño análisis que hice sobre el personaje canon que estoy trabajando para las actividades del grupo de Selfshipping: Pete Richardson del anime Daiku Maryu Gaiking.
Uno de los errores más frecuentes al momento de crear un personaje es que caiga en la categoría "Gary Stu", el cual es la contraparte masculina del "Mary Sue".
Pero...¿qué es esto de Gary Stu? Empecemos definiéndolo para quienes no están familiarizados aún con el término.
Un Gary Stu es un personaje de ficción masculino que termina siendo muy idealizado hasta el punto de ser prácticamente perfecto. Al carecer de defectos tanto en su personalidad como su apariencia física, termina siendo aburrido ya que pierde verosimilitud para los lectores o los espectadores y su desarrollo es prácticamente nulo ya que no puede ser más perfecto de lo que ya es por lo que no se crea empatía con la audiencia.
Y ¿cómo podemos detectar si un personaje es Gary Stu?
Algunas de las características más comunes de este tipo de personajes son el poder resolver problemas de manera muy fácil, se convierte en el punto de admiración o de dependencia de los demás personajes, no hay forma de darle un arco de crecimiento ya que ha llegado al punto máximo de perfección y su presencia en la trama no crea consecuencias creibles para quien lo lee u observa.
Ahora bien, si analizamos a Pete Richardson, podríamos encontrar algunas de estas características que nos harían pensar que es un personaje Gary Stu.
Empecemos a desglosar estas características y las ejemplificaré con screenshots del anime como recurso visual:
1.- Habilidades técnicas superiores: Se nos muestra a Pete como un piloto excepcional cuya pericia salva misiones. Esto se refuerza en diálogos donde algunos personajes lo dicen abierta mente: Brando Drumond, piloto del robot Gaiking, admite "Pete, sé que eres muy hábil como piloto..." o el Capitán Po reconociendo sus habilidades " Y tú, Pete. Eres un excelente y experto piloto del Gran Dragón del Espacio. Eres fabuloso como tal". Sin embargo, esta habilidad no entra dentro de un Gary Stu ya que él tuvo entrenamiento con la Marina Cameriana, que en la historia se muestra como una fuerza muy importante. Y para reforzar que tiene debilidades, podemos ver cómo en una oportunidad, al tener que aterrizar al Gran Dragón del Espacio en una pista de aviones normales, a pesar de lograrlo de manera impecable, se limpia el sudor de la frente por la dificil maniobra que tuvo que realizar. También podemos ver su vulnerabilidad como piloto al tener que enfrentar a un enemigo usando el Cortador Gigante con el riesgo de acabar con su hermano quien se encontraba prisionero con el monstruo. Al finalizar la maniobra, a pesar de haberse mostrado decidido, podemos ver cómo respira aliviado. Por lo que la superioridad de sus habilidades no es casual sino producto de un estricto entrenamiento.
2.- Calma bajo presión: Se nos muestra al capitán como un personaje capaz de mantener la calma en situaciones de riesgo, con un temple superior al del personaje principal. El Dr. Diamond lo reconoce como tal "Todo salió bien gracias a la calma y el buen juicio de Pete. Debes estarle agradecido". Es una habilidad que sus compañeros reconocen. Sin embargo, no siempre el valiente capitán se muestra inamovible en situaciones de riesgo. En un capítulo, se nos muestra a un Pete vulnerable ante el ataque de un monstruo "Doctor...nos vamos a hundir como el buque tanque...ya no hay salvación, créame...". También se le ve perder la calma cuando Brando se encuentra en situaciones de ataque que ponen en riesgo su vida, por lo que el aspecto de perfección Gary Stu queda fuera en esta habilidad.
3.- Liderazgo y respeto: Pete es el líder de la nave y las decisiones que toma tienen peso, después del Dr. Diamond en la cadena de mando. Incluso Gene Sykon, asistente del Dr. Diamond está supeditado a su mando y el capitán es capaz de recordárselos " ¿Por qué se permitieron tomar una decisión sin antes consultar con el Dr. Diamond o conmigo en último caso?". No obstante, sus compañeros a veces desafían su autoridad haciendo que la relación entre ellos sea más real. No sólamente Brando Drumond lo desafía abiertamente en más de una ocasión, sino que vemos a otros personajes como Fan-Li, quien es bastante tranquilo y disciplinado, decir frases como "tú no deberías contestarle así", cuando Pete le da una respuesta bastante agresiva y directa a Brando o también "no le des importancia", para calmar la molestia de Brando. También podemos ver escenas donde el Dr Diamond pide a Pete dejar que los otros miembros de la tripulación tomen sus decisiones"Pete, es mejor que dejes este asunto en manos de Gene y tú, vuelve a tu posición ". Por lo que la relación entre ellos dista mucho en ser perfecta, alejando este aspecto del estereotipo Gary Stu.
Por lo tanto, a pesar que Pete Richarson muestra virtudes muy pronunciadas, es un excelente piloto, posee una calma extrema y un gran auto control en los momentos difìciles y es un líder efectivo, tiene también un defecto constante y persistente en su personalidad y eso es la excesiva rigidez disciplinaria y la frialdad emocional a causa de la tragedia de sus padres. Esto lo aleja completamente de ser un personaje Gary Stu porque su trauma tiene consecuencias reales y genera conflictos interpersonales que limitan o complican sus acciones, permitiendo de esta forma que el personaje pueda tener un arco de desarrollo en su acoplamiento con el resto de sus compañeros en las misiones.

Today, I want to share a brief analysis I did on the canon character I'm working on for the Selfshipping group activities: Pete Richardson from the anime Daiku Maryu Gaiking.
One of the most common mistakes when creating a character is falling into the "Gary Stu" category, which is the male counterpart of the "Mary Sue."
But...what is this Gary Stu? Let's start by defining it for those who are not yet familiar with the term.
A Gary Stu is a male fictional character who ends up being very idealized to the point of being practically perfect. Lacking flaws in both personality and physical appearance, he ends up being boring because he loses verisimilitude for readers or viewers, and his development is practically non-existent because he cannot be more perfect than he already is, so no empathy is created with the audience.
And how can we detect if a character is a Gary Stu?
Some of the most common characteristics of this type of character are the ability to solve problems very easily, becoming the point of admiration or dependence for other characters, there is no way to give him an arc of growth since he has reached the maximum point of perfection, and his presence in the plot does not create believable consequences for the reader or viewer.
Now, if we analyze Pete Richardson, we might find some of these characteristics that would make us think he is a Gary Stu character.
Let's break down these characteristics and I will illustrate them with screenshots from the anime as a visual resource:
1. Superior technical skills: Pete is shown as an exceptional pilot whose skill saves missions. This is reinforced in dialogues where some characters openly say it: Brando Drumond, pilot of the robot Gaiking, admits "Pete, I know you are very skilled as a pilot..." or Captain Po recognizing his abilities "And you, Pete. You are an excellent and expert pilot of the Great Space Dragon. You are fabulous as such." However, this skill does not fall into a Gary Stu because he had training with the Camerian Navy, which is shown as a very important force in the story. And to reinforce that he has weaknesses, we can see how on one occasion, having to land the Great Space Dragon on a normal airplane runway, despite doing it impeccably, he wipes the sweat from his brow due to the difficult maneuver he had to perform. We can also see his vulnerability as a pilot when he has to face an enemy using the Giant Cutter with the risk of ending his brother who was imprisoned with the monster. At the end of the maneuver, despite having shown himself to be decided, we can see how he breathes a sigh of relief. Therefore, the superiority of his skills is not casual but the product of strict training.
2. Calm under pressure: Pete is shown as a character capable of maintaining calm in risky situations, with a temperament superior to that of the main character. Dr. Diamond recognizes him as such "Everything went well thanks to Pete's calm and good judgment. You should be grateful to him." It is a skill that his companions recognize. However, the brave captain is not always immovable in risky situations. In one chapter, we see a vulnerable Pete facing a monster's attack "Doctor...we are going to sink like the tanker...there is no salvation, believe me...". We also see him lose his calm when Brando is in situations of attack that put his life at risk, so the aspect of Gary Stu perfection is out of this skill.
3. Leadership and respect: Pete is the leader of the ship and the decisions he makes have weight, after Dr. Diamond in the chain of command. Even Gene Sykon, Dr. Diamond's assistant, is subordinate to his command and the captain is able to remind him "Why did you allow a decision to be made without first consulting with Dr. Diamond or me in the last case?" However, his companions sometimes challenge his authority, making the relationship between them more real. Not only does Brando Drumond openly challenge him on more than one occasion, but we also see other characters like Fan-Li, who is quite calm and disciplined, say phrases like "you shouldn't answer him like that," when Pete gives Brando a quite aggressive and direct response or also "don't give it importance," to calm Brando's annoyance. We can also see scenes where Dr. Diamond asks Pete to let the other crew members make their decisions: "Pete, it's better if you leave this matter in Gene's hands and you return to your position." Therefore, the relationship between them is far from being perfect, distancing this aspect from the Gary Stu stereotype.
Therefore, although Pete Richardson shows very pronounced virtues, he is an excellent pilot, possesses extreme calm and great self-control in difficult moments, and is an effective leader, he also has a constant and persistent flaw in his personality and that is excessive disciplinary rigidity and emotional coldness due to the tragedy of his parents. This completely distances him from being a Gary Stu character because his trauma has real consequences and generates interpersonal conflicts that limit or complicate his actions, allowing the character to have a development arc in his adaptation with the rest of his companions in the missions.
