¡Hola querida comunidad amante del anime y el manga!
¡Feliz Viernes! Ya el fin de semana está aquí y es momento para un bien merecido descanso y tener un momento de paz y calma así que, con esta premisa, les comparto hoy un fanart que hice para las actividades del grupo de Selfshipping para la pareja OCxCanon de Gaiking: Pete e Ylia.
Vivir con la constante de ser atacados por las fuerzas enemigas es algo a lo que han tenido que acostumbrarse para mantenerse alertas en el momento que sea requerido. Así que los momentos de paz y tranquilidad son siempre bien apreciados.
La base secreta del Gran Dragón del Espacio se encuentra oculta debajo del faro de Saratoga. La playa y la montaña bordea el área haciendo que el lugar parezca lo menos posible un lugar sospechoso a los enemigos.
Aprovechando uno de esos momentos de calma, Pete lleva a la recién llegada aprendiz de piloto, Ylia, a dar un paseo por la playa para que conozca los alrededores. Brando se había ofrecido a llevarla a conocer el lugar pero Pete, a quien no le está gustando esa amistad que se está formando entre el piloto de Gaiking y la nueva aprendiz, prefirió llevarla él para evitar que Brando pueda seguir influyendo en el aprendizaje de Ylia, al enseñarle a ser tan falto de disciplina como es él.
Ylia, quien no está al tanto de la dinámica entre estos dos jóvenes, sólo está feliz de poder conocer el sitio y compartir un momento con el estricto y demandante capitán, fuera de la tensión del deber en el día a día.
Con esto, quise hacer una ilustración que pudiera reflejar el momento que comparten bajo la calma del momento y aún con la resistencia de Pete a querer dejar que alguien se acerque mucho a él.
Lo primero, fue disponer en el boceto la posición de los personajes. Quería que el Faro de Saratoga fuera el punto central de la imagen sin que restara importancia al momento que comparten ellos así que el faro está al centro a la distancia, mientras Ylia y Pete permanecen en primer plano.
Luego, fui definiendo los detalles. El estilo de ropa que usan en Gaiking es muy típico de la moda de finales de los 70´s. Cuando no viste su uniforme, Pete suele usar un sueter azul oscuro con la inicial de su nombre, viste una camisa blanca de cuello alto y pantalones azules claros. Para Ylia, seleccioné un vestido de falda mini (en esa época las faldas eran realmente mini) y botas altas.
Luego, comencé a colorear el background que es la parte que más sobresale para crear la atmosfera de calma y tranquilidad que hay alrededor de ellos. Trabajé el fondo por capas de modo de enfocarme en los diferentes planos de la ilustración y para darles el aspecto de anime retro, las brochas de acuarela fueron mis mejores aliadas. Tomé inspiración de la escenografía de Gaiking para realizar la ilustración. Me fascina las paletas de colores que usaban para los ambientes.
Luego, coloree a los personajes con colores planos al estilo del anime.
En lugar de usar sombras por cada color, ajusté el tono de los un poco más oscuro y utilicé iluminación para dar la sensación de que se encuentran a la sombra de ese lugar de la montaña desde donde observan la playa. Y este fue el resultado final:
Trabajar la historia de Pete e Ylia ha resultado bastante divertida. No solo aprendo sobre cómo llevar la narrativa para historias de corte romántico sino que, al enfocarme en un anime con técnica tradicional, me permite tanto aprender cómo resolvían algunas cosas en la animación sin muchos recursos técnicos, como practicar escenografías, algo a lo que sinceramente no le prestaba mucha atención antes. ¡Y esto es todo por el momento!

Happy Friday! The weekend is here, and it’s time for a well-deserved break and a moment of peace and calm. With that in mind, I’m sharing today a fan art I made for the Selfshipping group’s activities, featuring the OC×Canon couple from Gaiking: Pete and Ylia.
Living with the constant threat of enemy attacks is something they’ve had to get used to in order to stay alert whenever needed. That’s why moments of peace and tranquility are always greatly appreciated.
The Space Great Dragon’s secret base is hidden beneath the Saratoga lighthouse. The beach and the mountain border the area, making the place look as unassuming as possible to enemies.
Taking advantage of one of those calm moments, Pete takes the newly arrived pilot trainee, Ylia, for a walk on the beach so she can get to know the surroundings. Brando had offered to show her the place, but Pete, who isn’t happy about the friendship forming between Gaiking’s pilot and the new trainee, preferred to take her himself to prevent Brando from influencing Ylia’s training, teaching her to be as undisciplined as he is.
Ylia, unaware of the dynamic between these two young men, is simply happy to explore the site and share a moment with the strict and demanding captain, away from the daily tension of duty.
With this, I wanted to create an illustration that could reflect the moment they share under the calm, despite Pete’s reluctance to let anyone get too close to him.
First, I arranged the characters’ positions in the sketch. I wanted the Saratoga Lighthouse to be the focal point of the image without detracting from the moment they share, so the lighthouse is centered in the distance, while Ylia and Pete remain in the foreground.
Then, I started defining the details. The clothing style in Gaiking is very typical of late ’70s fashion. When he’s not in uniform, Pete usually wears a dark blue sweater with the initial of his name, a white turtleneck shirt, and light blue pants. For Ylia, I chose a mini-skirt dress (skirts were really mini back then) and tall boots.
Next, I began coloring the background, which is the most prominent part to create the atmosphere of calm and tranquility around them. I worked on the background in layers to focus on the different planes of the illustration, and to give them that retro anime look, watercolor brushes were my best allies. I took inspiration from Gaiking’s set designs for the illustration. I love the color palettes they used for the environments.
Then, I colored the characters with flat colors in anime style.
Instead of using shadows for each color, I darkened the tones slightly and used lighting to give the impression that they’re in the shade of the mountain spot from which they observe the beach. And this was the final result:
Working on Pete and Ylia’s story has been quite fun. Not only am I learning how to craft narrative for romantic tales, but by focusing on an anime with traditional techniques, I get to learn how they solved some animation challenges without many technical resources and practice set design, something I hadn’t paid much attention to before.
