Greetings, Hivers. How are you today?
A few days ago, while taking some photos inside a very busy place in Havana, I had a brief conversation with a worker who told me that photography wasn’t allowed there — even though it’s a public place. I honestly found it funny, because there were literally dozens of people around doing the same thing with their phones.
If we think about it, nowadays everyone carries a powerful camera in their pocket. About fifteen or twenty years ago, at least in Cuba, taking a camera out in the street was something unusual — and it often brought problems. I remember a colleague who was photographing a quinceañera near the tunnel by the bay; he was detained by the police and spent the night in a cell because they said he was photographing “strategic objectives.” It was a nightmare.
Fortunately, that kind of attitude is now unthinkable when everything is recorded, photographed, and shared. I believe these are stigmas from our recent past that some people still haven’t managed to overcome. Sadly, we still have to deal with that.
Today’s photos were taken during a religious procession in Havana, but I think they perfectly illustrate what I’m talking about. I hope you enjoy them. I’ll be reading your thoughts.

Hace unos días, mientras hacía unas fotos dentro de un centro muy concurrido en La Habana, tuve una breve conversación con una trabajadora del lugar que me dijo que no se podían hacer fotos allí —a pesar de ser un sitio público—. Me pareció un chiste, porque alrededor había literalmente decenas de personas haciendo lo mismo con sus móviles.
Y es que, si lo analizamos, hoy en día todo el mundo lleva encima una potente cámara. Hace unos quince o veinte años, al menos en Cuba, sacar una cámara en la calle era algo insólito, y además traía muchos problemas. Recuerdo a un colega que estaba haciendo unas fotos de quince en el parque cerca del túnel de la bahía; la policía lo detuvo y pasó la noche en un calabozo porque decían que estaba fotografiando “objetivos estratégicos”. Una verdadera pesadilla.
Hoy, sin embargo, no se concibe una actitud así cuando todo se graba, todo se fotografía y todo se comparte. Creo que son estigmas de un pasado reciente que algunas personas aún no han podido superar. Lamentablemente, todavía tenemos que lidiar con eso.
Las fotografías de hoy las tomé durante una procesión religiosa en La Habana, pero creo que ilustran muy bien de lo que les hablo. Espero que les gusten. Los leo.
