Hello Hivers, today while walking through El Vedado in Havana I stumbled upon this huge monument, and as I thought about it, I realized I had never really come close to it. Or at least I don’t remember doing so. So I took the chance to make some photos and share them with you.
It is the Monument to the Victims of the Maine, located right on the Havana Malecón. It was inaugurated in 1925 to remember the U.S. sailors who died in the explosion of the battleship USS Maine in 1898, an event that deeply marked Cuba’s history and triggered the intervention of the United States in the war of independence. Beyond the political controversies it went through in different times, today I see it as a living place: a meeting point where young and old people gather to talk, to look at the sea, or simply to let time pass in front of the Havana breeze.
And well, after this brief history and my personal visit to this impressive monument, I hope you enjoy this small series. I’ll be reading you.
Hola amigos Hivers, dando un paseo hoy por el vedado habanero choqué con este enorme monumento, y haciendo memoria me di cuenta que nunca me había acercado a él. O no recuerdo haberlo hecho. Así que aproveché para hacerle algunas fotos y compartirlas con ustedes.
Se trata del Monumento a las Víctimas del Maine, que está en pleno Malecón habanero. Fue inaugurado en 1925 para recordar a los marineros estadounidenses fallecidos en la explosión del acorazado USS Maine en 1898, un hecho que marcó profundamente la historia de Cuba y dio inicio a la intervención de Estados Unidos en la guerra de independencia. Más allá de las polémicas políticas que lo rodearon en distintas épocas, hoy lo veo como un lugar vivo: punto de encuentro donde jóvenes y viejos se sientan a conversar, a mirar el mar o simplemente a dejar pasar el tiempo frente a la brisa habanera.
Y bueno, después de esta breve historia y de mi visita personal a este impresionante monumento, espero que disfruten de esta pequeña serie. Los leo.
