«Harrison, ven a ver lo que encontré, es algo muy extraño». El chico llamaba a su hermano.
Duncan y Harrison fueron a ver a la playa la gran cantidad de ballenas que habían encallado sin ningún motivo aparente. La mortandad de los grandes mamíferos se tomaba el panorama de la playa.
Los hermanos estaban fotografiando con sus celulares la horrible escena. Harrison atendía el llamado de su pequeño hermano. Los pasos presurosos iban dejando huellas en la arena, en tanto el aire estaba impregnado de pestilencia y las gaviotas se daban un festín con los grandes cuerpos.
«Oh, eso es muy extraño. Es como la mitad de una cola de pez, pero...». Harrison se agachaba a quitar un montón de algas que se habían enredado en la parte superior del cuerpo.
Con cierto miedo, Duncan miraba expectante a lo que estaba debajo de las algas y la arena. «Harrison, es como un dorso humano». Los ojos de los hermanos se abrían al máximo de sus cuencas.
El dorso era azulado brillante y con escamas muy finas. Harrison seguía quitando las algas y el cuerpo se hacía más visible. Duncan registraba con su celular el hallazgo. Al descubrir la cabeza vieron que sus facciones se parecían mucho a las de un humano.
Sorprendidos gritaron, «¡Una sirena!».
En ese momento escucharon una voz estridente que los hizo asustar. «¿Qué hacen ahí?, chicos».
Los hermanos salieron corriendo hacia la casa. Unos militares fueron tras ellos con órdenes de atraparlos. Los chicos no pudieron llegar muy lejos hasta ser atrapados por los soldados. Duncan y Harrison fueron llevados ante el sargento.
«¿Díganme, que estaban haciendo aquí?». El sargento hablaba con autoridad intimidante.
«Nada, nada, señor». Duncan temeroso se dirigía al sargento.
«No me traten como un tonto». El sargento hacía señas a un soldado. «Soldado, quíteles lo celulares y revisen las fotos y los videos».
Los soldados quitaron los celulares a los hermanos y empezaron a revisar lo que tenían. Los militares procedieron borrar las evidencias de la criatura, después unas personas vestidas con trajes especiales como astronautas, llegaron y empezaron a levantar a la criatura. Toda la zona fue acordonada por los militares.
El sargento se dirigía a los hermanos. «¿Que haremos con ustedes?». Se sacaba la gorra y miraba fijamente a los hermanos. «Vieron algo que no debían. Aquello es un secreto de estado».
«No fue nuestra intención. Vinimos a documentar la mortandad de la ballenas y nos encontramos con esa criatura». Duncan casi con los ojos llorosos se dirigía al sargento.
«No los podemos dejar ir así no más. Tienen información secreta que no puede ser divulgada a nadie». El sargento golpeaba sutilmente el escritorio con un lápiz.
«No le diremos a nadie lo que vimos, señor. Se lo juramos con el corazón». Harrison se ponía la mano en el pecho. «Esto que vimos se irá con nosotros a la tumba, créanos, señor. Nosotros...».
En ese momento, un gran alboroto se oyó en la playa, uno de los militares entraba corriendo y le decía al sargento. «Sargento, sargento, el mar ha empezado a encresparse y unas nubes oscuras se vienen para acá».
El sargento salía corriendo de la tienda de campaña y miraba una gran tormenta aproximarse. El cielo rugía y los rayos caían con una furia indescriptible. El sargento miraba espantado el panorama y decía, «Soldado, orden de retirada. ¡Pronto!». El sargento regresó la mirada a los hermanos. «Vamos, chicos. Debemos salir de aquí».
Cuando iban corriendo, los hermanos y el sargento vieron que del mar salía algo gigantesco, era la figura de un hombre con una barba larga y blanca con un tridente en su mano derecha. Los ojos de la criatura brillaban intensamente mientras que los soldados estaban atónitos.
Ese ser apuntó el tridente hacia el cielo y una gran ola se formó. El sargento gritaba, «Soldados, corran».
La lluvia arreciaba fuertemente, mientras la ola se dirigía a la costa a toda velocidad. Los hombres corrían rápidamente tratando de buscar salvarse. En un momento fugaz, la ola arrasó la playa, a los soldados y a las ballenas muertas.
El sargento corría con los hermanos tratando de salvarlos. El ser gigantesco los vio, apuntando el tridente hizo que un rayo cayera sobre el sargento. Los hermanos quedaron tirados en la playa, inconscientes. Después de un tiempo indeterminado, los chicos abrieron los ojos y las imágenes se iban aclarando de a poco.
Se levantaron y miraron el cielo azul con un hermoso sol radiante. En la playa, no quedaba más que la arena doraba, y el mar que se movía tranquilamente al vaivén de la brisa.
Duncan y Harrison se miraron desconcertados, no sabían lo que había sucedido en realidad y salieron corriendo para su casa sin voltear a mirar a la playa. Luego, desde el fondo del mar unas siluetas jugueteaban con los peces y desaparecían en lo profundo.

“Harrison, come see what I found, it's something very strange.” The boy called out to his brother.
Duncan and Harrison went to the beach to see the large number of whales that had beached themselves for no apparent reason. The death of the large mammals dominated the beach scene.
The brothers were photographing the horrific scene with their cell phones. Harrison answered his little brother's call. Their hurried footsteps left tracks in the sand, while the air was filled with a foul odor and seagulls feasted on the large bodies.
"Oh, that's very strange. It's like half a fish tail, but..." Harrison bent down to remove a pile of seaweed that had become entangled in the upper part of the body.
With some fear, Duncan looked expectantly at what was under the seaweed and sand. “Harrison, it's like a human back.” The brothers' eyes widened to the maximum.
The back was bright blue and covered with very fine scales. Harrison continued to remove the seaweed, and the body became more visible. Duncan recorded the discovery with his cell phone. When they discovered the head, they saw that its features closely resembled those of a human.
Surprised, they shouted, “A mermaid!”
At that moment, they heard a shrill voice that startled them. “What are you doing there, boys?”
The brothers ran toward the house. Some soldiers followed them with orders to catch them. The boys couldn't get very far before they were caught by the soldiers. Duncan and Harrison were taken before the sergeant.
“Tell me, what were you doing here?” The sergeant spoke with intimidating authority.
“Nothing, nothing, sir.” Duncan spoke fearfully to the sergeant.
“Don't treat me like a fool.” The sergeant signaled to a soldier. “Soldier, take their cell phones and check the photos and videos.”
The soldiers took the brothers' cell phones and began to check what they had. The military proceeded to erase the evidence of the creature, then people dressed in special suits like astronauts arrived and began to lift the creature. The entire area was cordoned off by the military.
The sergeant addressed the brothers. “What shall we do with you?” He took off his cap and stared at the brothers. “You saw something you shouldn't have. That is a state secret.”
“It wasn't our intention. We came to document the whale deaths and we came across that creature.” Duncan, his eyes almost teary, addressed the sergeant.
“We can't just let you go. You have secret information that cannot be disclosed to anyone.” The sergeant tapped his pencil subtly on the desk.
“We won't tell anyone what we saw, sir. We swear it with all our hearts.” Harrison placed his hand on his chest. "What we saw will go with us to the grave, believe us, sir. We..."
At that moment, a great commotion was heard on the beach, and one of the soldiers ran in and said to the sergeant, “Sergeant, sergeant, the sea has begun to churn and dark clouds are coming this way.”
The sergeant ran out of the tent and saw a huge storm approaching. The sky roared and lightning struck with indescribable fury. The sergeant looked at this scene in horror and said, “Soldier, order to retreat. Quickly!” The sergeant turned his gaze back to the brothers. “Come on, boys. We have to get out of here.”
As they ran, the brothers and the sergeant saw something gigantic rising out of the sea. It was the figure of a man with a long white beard and a trident in his right hand. The creature's eyes shone brightly while the soldiers stood stunned.
The creature pointed the trident toward the sky, and a huge wave formed. The sergeant shouted, “Soldiers, run!”
The rain fell heavily as the wave headed toward the coast at full speed. The men ran quickly, trying to save themselves. In a fleeting moment, the wave swept over the beach, the soldiers, and the dead whales.
The sergeant ran with the brothers, trying to save them. The giant saw them, pointed his trident, and caused a bolt of lightning to strike the sergeant. The brothers lay unconscious on the beach. After an indeterminate amount of time, the boys opened their eyes and their vision slowly cleared.
They got up and looked at the blue sky with a beautiful, radiant sun. On the beach, there was nothing left but golden sand and the sea moving calmly with the breeze.
Duncan and Harrison looked at each other in bewilderment, not knowing what had really happened, and ran home without looking back at the beach. Then, from the bottom of the sea, silhouettes played with the fish and disappeared into the depths.
