THE VALUE OF THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM

Having a higher education till this day is important, the problem lies mostly in people not understanding what to do with it, I can boldly tell you that a higher education certificate is widely used in here as criteria to show once qualification for job positions, it is believed that someone who must have graduated from a higher institution is not only more employable, he or she is better off to train. Using where I presently work for instance, it is often noticed that the issues mostly faced are from the staff members who did not go to a higher institution to get a degree, they tend to do things differently and are very difficult to handle, mostly refusing to understand the value of work procedures and in most cases, they mess things up simply because they refuse to follow procedure.

Getting a degree is very beneficial to a person personally, you learn a lot in school, the problem sometimes is how to practice what you have learnt. Although we might not get to use some of what we are taught in school, we still get to apply most of what we learn in school. I believe that what we learn in school still affects our way of life. You can sometimes tell through a person’s character what he studied in school just by observing that person. I have come in contact with what I have learnt during my degree days in my personal life and even otherwise, and I have made decisions based on what I was taught in school, and it has helped me positively.

While a lot of people these days are of the notion that there is no value to getting a degree, I disagree with that notion. It is sad to see that the economy has fallen short of its glory, having more unemployment and underemployed workers, but this situation still doesn’t undermine the value of a degree. Some People feel that a person would have been better off if he or she had used those years spent in bagging a degree into learning a trade or a handy work. I would like to let you know that a person who might have gone for his degree and then returned to learning a trade or skill gets it better and has a better chance at success most times in comparison to a person who, after his secondary school education, embarked on learning a skill or a trade.

The higher institution is not only a place to acquire knowledge, but it is a place where we meet other people who will be valuable to us in future. An important aspect of the school design is connecting like-minded individuals. The school makes it possible for us to meet others who are like-minded. You will find a lot of cases of business partners who met as classmates and schoolmates.

There is a lot of relevance in getting a degree, which is why developed governments still make sure they invest heavily in education, giving grants for research and scholarship to those who cannot afford the cost of having a degree. The thing that could be added in school could be in a sort of mentorship programme where successful alumni of schools could take in students for mentorship, helping them realise early what they can do with the degree they pursue.

An accountant, for instance, practically lives on what he or she must have learnt from school, and if employed as an accountant, puts into practice what he or she must have learnt in the course of their studies. A good accountant puts into practice the skills they learn from school. As an economist, I have lived my life practically to date applying knowledge learnt as an economist, although I don’t practice as a profession, it surfaces in my day-to-day living. Studying economics in school helped me understand and practice critical thinking and research.
