The compound was already filled with whispers and excitement. Mama adjusted my collar for the fifth time.
“Remember, don’t rush. Walk gently when it’s your turn to greet the VIP,” she said.
It was a celebration of my successful years in the service of the community, and the VIP was the guest of honor. It was really a great day. I was to hand over the position to someone else since my tenor had finished.
When the black SUV stopped at the gate, my palms turned sweaty. I had imagined this moment all week, but now my knees felt like they didn’t belong to me. Still, I walked forward, bowed slightly, and let my smile do the talking.
