Garden Journal - New House, November

Hive folk going schizo? Garden. Genocide? Garden. Knife attacks? Garden. House won't sell? Garden. You get the idea. It's why us gardeners get hands in the soil. It's suprisingly less messy there than it is in the Outside World.

Seriously though, it is a shame about Ray. He was nothing but nice to me when I was leader of Natural Medicine. I'd given up on the Layer 2 tokens a long time ago because I just didn't have time to wheel and deal in them, but I also didn't quite trust them. What did they do, exactly? I understand whatever BRO I have now is worthless - shame for those who invested. I had a few alarm bells sound a week or so ago when I had a look at the Flame community. I shied away from it for two reasons - one, wierd religious language, and two, I don't like Hive 'invite only' communities. Hive is meant to be for everyone. Exclusivity is just not my jam. Kudos to those who have been kind to him and asked him to seek help, and I do hope those who have lost money get it back. It does sound like a mental illness - sadly, a drama that will go down in the annuls of Hive history, and we've seen a few of those.

It's a shame about Ray In the stone, under the dust, his name is still engraved Some things need to go away (shame, shame) It's a shame about Ray (Put it away)

Anyway, that's enugh of that. Today we worked on bird and possum proofing my small vegetable patch at the new digs. As it's getting late in the season, we won't do a larger bed for now, and besides, Jamie's so flat out I decided to be nice to him and tell him we can wait til next winter to build the larger growing area. I'm standing at the top of the stairs to take this shot, looking down.

At the top of the stairs there's a large pot in which I've put a cherry tomato (perfect for salads), greek basil and thai basil - oh and a jalapeno.

We made the cover out of polypipe, scrap wood, and netting. The lower part will be dog mesh, when we can find some - that'll keep the possums out. They are quite devilish little buggers. We were lucky not to have them at the old place, but then, we had rabbits instead. One furry fucker swapped for another.

I'm going for quite crowded in terms of growing - it keeps the weeds down and shades the soil better. Those beds are enriched with seaweed and compost, and there's logs down below to keep it moist and full of bugs and bacteria, so I think everything should do well.

I'm just so freaking stoked that Jamie had the day off to help me do this today. It's Melbourne Cup today - a horse race which also makes a long weekend. I don't enjoy horse torturing but it's great to have a day off. So, a horse related tune... one of my favourite songs of all time. It's also #threetunetuesday, if you were wondering - thanks @ablaze.

And the horses, horses, horses, horses Coming in in all directions…

Melbourne Cup is also the day us gardeners plant tomatoes down in Vic. I cheated and did it a few weeks ago, as this part of the garden is a sun trap. I have a few in the ground, a few in the beds, and a few in the wicking buckets. I've put some chillis and capsicum in wicking buckets as well. In the background, beans and cucumber which will grow up the deck and trellis hopefully.

We have lettuce and eggplant planted as well.

Also, the herb garden is doing okay - I just planted herbs in pockets of compost in the sandy soil, and mulched with seaweed and old chicken manure straw. Everything seems happy so far. I've definitely fallen in love with seaweed. Remind me to talk to you guys about the compost and worms later too .

Hell, if we're talking Horses, let's do Wild Horses for the 3rd tune and call it a theme.

One last cool thing...

Can you see the nest here? It's under my grape vine at the old house. It's made by grey fantails out of cobwebs and small twigs and is amazing.

They're darting around everywhere at the moment. Gorgeous things. I'll miss the little birds around here. If you want to know what they look like see below. I love their little beak whiskers and their angry bird eyebrows, and the great tail they fan around.
