For two weeks in a row, we have had no one look through the house for the Saturday afternoon inspections, despite tidying the place to look as beautiful as possible. It's a low point in the market I suppose - things pick up in October, we're told. There's no point doing anything to change or beautify the house and garden because you have to get someone in to look at it. Hopefully soon we'll find a 'heart buyer'.
Yet the garden looks better than it ever has. We want people to look at it now, when it's at it's peak. Not only is the broccoli in flower and the snow peas bearing pods, but the fruit trees look incredible in blossom.
So when I look at my 'best of season' for the Hive Garden QOTW, I guess I'm thinking about the sixteen year season of living on this acreage and the best things in the garden right now. It's hard to choose one or two.
I'm certainly in love with the white blossom of this plum tree. I can see it from the south facing windows. lt looks like some kind of muppet. I can imagine it giving me a hug.
It does, I suppose, showering me with blossoms when I walk past. The whole yard looks like a wedding's gone by, especially when there's a wind up, as there has been lately.
And the crapabble - oh my days she's a pink princess, and a hot one at that. She's totally spectacular. Useless, because the fruit is fruitless, but gosh she makes us smile. I love them so much.
I also love the leaves of the artichokes. They're so spectacular and provide such great contrast in that part of the garden. I want to plant them at the new place, but it might not be worth it because of the space they take up and possums. You need a fair few to get enough flowers to eat and the season is so brief. I use a lot of the leaves for the compost though.
Sixteen years of loving this garden. Here's me with a garlic scape smile.
I also have to say that garlic leaves and garlic 🧄 chives are invaluable in the garden. They're great with eggs and easy to grow. I'll be taking a big pot of chives to the new place soon and you bet I'll be taking the garlic harvest.
And the irises. I never was a flower girl but damn I love the irises. I am so glad I planted them. Perhaps when people see them in bloom they'll buy the house instantly. Not long now.
The grass tree too, we're glad we transplanted that from the front to the back - she's just about to come into flower.
To choose the 'best in show' for the garden is impossible. But certainly the blossoms are showing off and hard to resist at this time of the year.
I just hope some potential buyers find it irresistable as well.
This post is in response to the Hive Garden QOTW, which asks us to reflect on our 'best in show' for the season this week. Please feel free to write your own.
