Why Buy a Letter Box When You Can Make One?

Are letterboxes insanely expensive for what they are in your country? The flimsiest smallest box here is around $40. I suppose it'd be okay if I actually liked flimsy post boxes destroying the look of the front of my house but I'm house proud and I wanted something I could live with.

The last postbox was painted and ugly brown and was a relic of the 1980s. It had plastic white lettering which was also half painted brown. It had to go.

So, instead of doing important things like finishing painting the house, we instead took to the shed to see what we could find. An old wooden drawer of bike parts, some form ply, and copper from the old hot water service made the box.

I'm pretty sure it's the only letter box made of an old drawer with a copper roof in the whole of Australia if not the world.

We had found a cypress post under the house which was left over from building the deck. The last post box had a brown painted metal pole. We think this looks a lot warmer and more natural, don't you think?

I did have to buy some brass letters though. They stand out against the dark wood.

We may have only saved a measly $40 but I'm so happy with it. I was also chuffed that five minutes after instal, a huge rain came down and swept all the dust and dirt off the copper.

What do you think? Feel free to share your own letterbox below.

With Love,
