Tithing in Christendom has been debated over, in many quarters, with some believing it to be unnecessary. As a Christian myself, I am going to give it an interpretation from my own point of view, based on the scriptures.
In the old testament, especially during the time of Moses, tithing was made compulsory, and it includes the produce from their farmland and even their livestock. The anchor scripture is taken from Leviticus 27:30;
"A tithe of everything from the land… belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD.”
The income gotten from tithing is for the support and maintenance of the Levites. The Levites had no Land to farm on, they had no inheritance of Land because their sole duty was working for God. They had no other means of livelihood.
Numbers 18:21;
“To the sons of Levi, behold, I have given all the tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service which they perform, the service of the tent of meeting.”
A part of the tithe was also used to maintain the temple and to cater to the needs of the poor amongst them.
Deuteronomy 14:28-29.
At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates: And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest.
I do agree that tithing is mainly mentioned in the old covenant as a part of the law, I also believe that honoring God with 10% of our income is the right thing to do because even Abraham and Melchizedek practiced tithing long before Moses or the law was born.
🌸My Motto is: Work at making myself proud of myself.🌸
