Movies are not inherently sinful but the content of the movies, the effects they have on one's way of thinking or behavior, plus how much control they have over one's life, these might be considered factors that may render it sinful.
We can watch movies whose content supports or at least doesn't contradict Christian values. If it doesn't lead you into temptation or immoral behavior, It should be watched in moderation and not to be allowed to interfere with our relationship with God.
But when the movie promotes or glorifies sin, when it instigates lust, hatred, numbness to sin, or addiction, then it will negatively impact on you because It will corrupt your mind.
Philippians 4:8 says to think about whatever is pure, lovely, admirable.
Key Bible Verses to Consider:
Philippians 4:8 – “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure... think about such things.”
Psalm 101:3 – “I will set before my eyes no vile thing.”
1 Corinthians 10:23 – “I have the right to do anything... but not everything is beneficial.”
Romans 12:2 – “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
So watching movies is not a sin in itself but it has to be with discernment. We should be selective and thoughtful about what we allow into our hearts and minds. Just like food, not everything that tastes good is good for us spiritually.
If you’re ever in doubt about a movie, a good practice is to ask yourself;
“Would I feel comfortable watching this with Jesus sitting beside me?”
