In Genesis 1:26–27;

“Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…’ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

According to the Bible, this does not mean physical appearance because God is a Spirit.

John 4:24 says;

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

So the image of God does not mean we look like Him physically. It simply means spiritual and moral likeness; We reflect God’s nature in qualities such as holiness, righteousness, love, truth, and creativity.

Ephesians 4:24 says:

Put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

Being made in His image also vests in us the ability and responsibility to rule over creation according to Genesis 1:28;

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

Just as God rules the universe, man is given stewardship of the earth.

Jesus Christ is the perfect image of God. The fullness of God’s image is revealed in Jesus Christ.

Colossians 1:15: “He is the image of the invisible God.”

The image of God means humans were created to reflect God’s nature—spiritual, moral, relational, and with authority over creation. Though sin corrupted this image, Christ restores and renews it in us. Man is not just dust; he carries the breath and likeness of God Himself.
