A Cuban in Manhattan | [EN-ES]

Inspired by this #WednesdayWalk initiative, where @tattoodjay invites us to share our journey along the way, I ask you to join me and tell me what you think of the route I share. Perhaps you don't know this, or it might seem strange to you, but a Cuban in Manhattan can go through various stages. ***  *** He might be a millionaire, owner of an apartment in one of the skyscrapers that block out the sun from its streets; a migrant recently arrived from the island or elsewhere, his pockets as empty as the kindness of the person who passes him without a glance; a family man, a paramedic, just like everyone else, saving a life about to expire in an accident; an intern arriving for the first time and wandering the streets with a gaze so scattered that he doesn't know what to observe in detail... ***  ***  *** A Cuban, whether walking through Midtown Manhattan or Downtown Manhattan, will be recognized by his mannerisms, no matter how much he tries to hide it, how much money he has, or how lonely he is. ***  *** Manhattan is enormous. Someone who hasn't visited it and has only seen it in postcards, TV series, or movies might think it's a group of very tall concrete monsters, a subway that runs both underground and along the sides of its buildings, a park with lakes, and hundreds of people walking hurriedly without looking at each other. But Manhattan is more than that; it's truly enormous. Within each of its strata, one finds different ways of life, yet each possesses a unique identity that sets it apart from those who live in, or even just pass through, other cities. Today, I thought I'd share with you this stroll along a small section of Fifth Avenue and through Central Park at nightfall. ***  [//]:# (!worldmappin 40.76689 lat -73.97137 long Central Park Manhattan d3scr) *** I confess that I always thought this place was dangerous, very dangerous. I never imagined that, at night, one could walk along its paths in peace and enjoy the stars, their reflections in one lake or another, and perhaps stumble upon a woman alone, searching for squirrels, maybe to talk to because she has no one else, or perhaps because she wants to give her something delicious to eat. ***  ***  *** The climate, the contrasting views, the aroma of the trees, the embracing tranquility, the silence that resists above the maelstrom of city noises, are simply fantastic, much more so for a Cuban who manages to discover a reality opposite to what he had preconceived. ***  ***  *** One of the things I find most fascinating is rediscovering places I've only ever seen in postcards or videos, like this architectural marvel built in 1845 and perfectly preserved. It's Temple Emanu-El, the synagogue that hosted the first Reform Jewish congregation in New York. Not far from there, the museums, art galleries, and other attractions—which are impossible for a Cuban to miss—seem to come alive and beckon, beckoning to be visited. But that's for another time. For now, we'll say goodbye, but not before reminding you to keep smiling! To all, a big hug of light!

Motivados por esta iniciativa #WednesdayWalk, donde @tattoodjay nos invita a compartir nuestro viaje a lo largo del camino, les pido me acompañen y me cuenten qué les parece el recorrido con lo que les cuento. Tal vez no lo sepan, o les resulte extraño, pero un cubano en Manhattan puede transmutar por diversas etapas. ***  *** Puede ser un millonario, dueño de un piso en cualquier rascacielos que ocultan el sol a sus calles; un migrante recién llegado de la isla u otro sitio, con sus bolsillos tan vírgenes como la bondad de quien le cruza por el lado sin mirarle; un padre de familia, paramédico, como uno más, que salva alguna vida a punto de expirar por algún accidente; un becario que arriba por primera vez y transita por sus calles con la mirada tan dispersa que no sabe qué observar en detalle... ***  ***  *** Un cubano, da igual que camine por Midtown Manhattan o Downtown Manhattan, lo hará igual. Será reconocido por sus gestos, por mucho que lo oculte, por mucho dinero que tenga, o por mucha soledad que le acompañe. ***  *** Manhattan es enorme. Quien no la ha visitado y solo la ha visto en postales, series o películas, puede pensar es un grupo de monstruos de concreto muy altos, un metro que transita lo mismo por debajo de la tierra que por los costados de sus edificaciones, un parque con lagos y cientos de personas caminando apuradas sin mirarse. Pero Manhattan no es solo eso, es realmente enorme. En cada estratificación que posee, uno encuentra dinámicas de vida diferentes, y sin embargo con una identidad que les singulariza respecto a los que residen, incluso transitan, en otras ciudades. Hoy se me ocurre compartir con ustedes este recorrido por una pequeña parte de la 5ta Avenida y el interior de Central Park al caer la noche. ***  [//]:# (!worldmappin 40.76689 lat -73.97137 long Central Park Manhattan d3scr) *** Les confieso que siempre pensé este sitio era peligroso, muy peligroso. Jamás pensaría que, de noche, uno podría caminar por sus senderos en calma y disfrutar de las estrellas, sus reflejos en un lago u otro, tropezarse, por ejemplo, con una mujer sola buscando ardillas, quizá para conversar porque no tiene a nadie para ello, o tal vez porque desea darle algo exquisito de comida. ***  ***  *** El clima, las vistas contrastantes, el aroma de los árboles, la tranquilidad abrazadora, el silencio que se resiste sobre la vorágine de los ruidos citadinos, resultan simplemente fantásticos, mucho más para un cubano que logra descubrir una realidad opuesta a lo que tenía preconcebido. ***  ***  *** Uno de los detalles que más me resultan curiosos, es que uno puede redescubrir sitios que ha visto solo en postales o audiovisuales, tales como esta maravilla arquitectónica construida en 1845 y conservada perfectamente. Se trata de el Templo Emanu-El, sinagoga que acogió a la primera congregación del judaísmo reformista en New York. No lejos de allí los museos, las galerías de arte, y otras atracciones, que no pueden pasar desapercibidas para un cubano, parecen cobrar aliento e incitan a que sea visitados sí o sí, pero eso será en otra ocasión.
