Hello portrait photography lovers! Talking about this ancient form of photography always evokes feelings of pride and responsibility toward its rich history and its connection to Cuba, my country of origin, and all of the Americas. Let's briefly review some portrait history, and you'll understand why I emphasized what I said earlier. Many mistakenly believe that Louis Daguerre is credited with the beginning of photography, specifically with his daguerreotypes in France in 1839, the year Robert Cornelius took the first known photograph of himself—a self-portrait. However, few acknowledge that in earlier decades, in 1805, Esteban Martínez, a Mexican, had already succeeded in taking a photograph, and in 1833, again in the Americas, but specifically in Brazil, Hercules Florence achieved the same feat. Of course, both were initially unsuccessful in preserving their results, and it was ultimately Daguerre who ensured the images would endure through time, thanks to his appropriation of a technique that he himself did not create, but rather Joseph-Nicéphore Niépce, a French physicist who is rarely mentioned and who is indeed the founder of photography. Oh, I almost forgot, the word *Photography* was coined by Hercules Florence, immortalizing his idea that it is nothing other than *writing with light*, an evocation that reminds us of the interconnectedness of all the arts. Poetry, theater, and enduring sensations... The image is achieved through an almost poetic process and is created through almost theatrical poses. Let's consider Daguerre himself, who was a set designer. ***  *** Well, some might ask, why is Cuba mentioned in this story? Ah... Well, it's worth remembering that it was on this island that the world's first photographic studio and gallery was established in 1841 by George Washington Halsey. Of course, this studio was only accessible to people with significant financial means; it wasn't a service for everyone. ***  *** Since Cuba has served as a bridge between Europe and America in this respect, and since I have begun to pay homage to our American continent with my previous [portrait photographs](https://ecency.com/hive-153349/@roswelborges/worshipping-the-sun-through-time), today I want to imagine that we are transported to Mexico, to those sensual and regal faces that, without mentioning where they come from, one immediately identifies with the culture derived from the Aztecs, a culture and country that has always been very closely linked to our Caribbean island. ***  *** I take advantage of having the pleasure of photographing these wonderful people from Mexico, who were visiting here, to perpetuate their faces and embracing dance gestures. ***  ***  ***  ***  *** I'm sharing these photos intentionally, right in the middle of a conversation that proudly showcases the best traditional poses from beloved regions. Hablar de esta modalidad tan antigua de la fotografía siempre evoca sentimientos de orgullo y responsabilidad ante la historia que embarga y su relación con Cuba, mi país de origen, y la América toda. Recordemos un poco de historia del retrato brevemente y comprenderán por qué acotaba lo anteriormente expuesto. Muchos creen erróneamente se le adjudica a Louis Daguerre el inicio de la fotografía con sus daguerrotipos en la Francia de 1839, año en que Robert Cornelius tomó la primera fotografía conocida de sí mismo, o sea, un autorretrato. Sin embargo, pocos dan crédito a que, en décadas anteriores, exactamente en 1805, Esteban Martínez, un mexicano, ya había logrado realizar una fotografía, y en 1833, nuevamente en América, pero específicamente en Brasil, Hércules Florence, alcanzaba el mismo objetivo. Claro, ambos fracasaron momentáneamente en perpetuar sus resultados, siendo en definitiva Daguerre quien sí consigue permanezcan las imágenes en el tiempo gracias a una apropiación de una técnica que tampoco fue creada por él, sino por Joseph-Nicéphore Niépce, un físico francés que pocos nombran y quien sí es el fundador de la fotografía. ¡Ah!, casi lo olvido, la palabra *Fotografía* la creó Hércules Florence, inmortalizando su idea de que no se trata de otra cosa que *escribir con la luz*, evocación esta que nos recuerda la relación de las artes todas entre sí. Poesía, teatro y sensaciones perpetuas... La imagen se logra a través de un proceso casi poético y se realiza mediante poses casi teatrales. Tengamos en cuenta al propio Daguerre, quien era un escenógrafo. ***  *** Bueno, algunos preguntarán, ¿y Cuba por qué se menciona en esta historia? Ah... Pues es que resulta justo recordar que en esta isla fue donde se creó el primer estudio y galería de retratos fotográficos del mundo en 1841 por George Washington Halsey.
