Today, my wife and I visited one of the three castles on Margarita Island, and my favorite, the Castillo San Carlos de Borromeo or Castillo de Pampatar, located in Pampatar Bay and opposite the Santuario del Santísimo Cristo del Buen Viaje. This castle was built during the colonial era and served to protect the island from pirates and looters.

Hola amigos de hive y Hive Margarita, espero que todos se encuentren muy bien.
Hoy visite junto con mi esposa uno de los tres castillos que podemos encontrar en la isla de Margarita, y mí preferido, el Castillo San Carlos de Borromeo o el Castillo de Pampatar que se encuentra en la bahía de Pampatar y al frente del Santuario del Santísimo Cristo del Buen Viaje. Este castillo fue construido en la época colonial y sirvió para proteger a la isla de piratas y saqueadores.
The other castles are El Fuerte de Santa Rosa de la Eminencia, commonly known as Castillo Santa Rosa, located in La Asunción, from where you can see much of La Asunción and Cerro Matasiete, and Fortín de la Galera, located in Juan Griego, with a breathtaking view of Juan Griego Bay and the Macanao Peninsula.
At the entrance to the Castle of San Carlos de Borromeo, we find several cannons from the colonial era. To access the castle, we must cross a wooden bridge. Once we cross the bridge and enter the castle, we can see several heraldic coats of arms made of wood and metal on the walls.

Los otros castillos son El Fuerte de Santa Rosa de la Eminencia, común mente conocido como el Castillo Santa Rosa que se encuentra en La Asunción y desde allí se ve gran parte de la Asunción y el Cerro Matasiete y también tenemos el Fortín de la Galera que se ubica en Juan Griego con una vista impresionante de la bahía de Juan Griego y la Península de Macanao.
En la entrada del Castillo de San Carlos de Borromeo encontramos varios cañones de la época colonial, para acceder al castillo debemos pasar por un puente de madera, una vez que cruzamos el puente y entramos al castillo se puede observar en las paredes varios escudos de armas heráldicos hechos de madera y metal.
Upon entering, my first impression was how well preserved the castle is, painted, clean, and above all, maintaining its stone structure.
Inside the castle, we can see several spaces, such as a central square where we can see cannons, two iron bullets, and an anchor from the colonial era, completely corroded by rust, as well as a well with seawater visible at the bottom.

Al entrar mí primera impresión fue ver lo bien conservado que se encuentra el castillo, pintado, limpio y sobre todo manteniendo su estructura de piedras.
Ya dentro del castillo podemos observar varios espacios, como una plaza central donde podemos apreciar unos cañones, dos balas de hierro y un ancla pertenecientes a la época colonial completamente corroidos por el óxido, además de un pozo que se ve en el fondo el agua del mar.
Around the square, there are several rooms where we can find different paintings, furniture, and objects from the colonial era, as well as a model of Pampatar.
Among the paintings, there is one depicting the arrival of several ships in Pampatar Bay. According to the label on the painting, these are the ships of the Pacificator Don Pablo Morillo's fleet. There is also a painting of Commander-in-Chief Juan Bautista Arismendi waving the national flag, another painting depicting the assault on San Carlos Borromeo Castle in 1813, and another painting without an informative label but which depicts some other battle.

Alrededor de la plaza podemos hallar varias habitaciones donde encontramos diferentes pinturas, muebles y objetos de la época colonial, además de una maqueta de Pampatar.
Entre los cuadros encontramos una pintura que refleja la llegada de varios barcos a la bahía de Pampatar, estos son la Flota del Pacificador Don Pablo Morillo según indica la etiqueta de la pintura, hay una pintura del General en Jefe Juan Bautista Arismendi ondeando la bandera nacional, tenemos otra pintura que representa al asalto al Castillo San Carlos Borromeo de 1813 y otra que no tiene etiqueta informativa, pero que escenifica alguna otra batalla.
There are also several display cases, one containing an exhibition of several swords and scabbards from the colonial era, and above it are two colonial armor breastplates. Another display case contains various tools, jars, pots, and clay plates. Here we can also see some wooden furniture such as a table, chairs, and a bench, as well as a lamp from the same period.
Behind the square, there is a large stone ramp that invites us to walk to the top, where we can see the thick stone walls of the castle.
When we reach the top, we can see the impressive view of Pampatar Bay in front of us, with its blue sea. In the distance, we can see Punta Ballena, La Caranta, and part of the coast of Pampatar. If we turn around, we find the Sanctuary of the Holy Christ of the Good Journey, the Municipal Palace of Maneiro, the Manuel Plácido Maneiro House of Culture, and the Customs House of Pampatar.

También hay varios mostradores, uno que contiene en su interior la exhibición de varias espadas y vainas de la época colonial, y sobre esta hay dos petos de armaduras coloniales, otra que contiene varias herramientas, frascos, vasijas y platos de arcillas. Acá también podemos observar algunos muebles de madera como una mesa, sillas y un banco como también una lámpara de la misma época.
Detrás de la plaza encontramos una gran rampa de piedras que nos invita a caminar hasta la parte superior, y allí podemos observar las gruesas paredes de piedras que contiene el castillo.
Al llegar a la parte superior podemos ver al frente la impresionante vista de la bahía de Pampatar, con su mar azul, a lo lejos podemos divisar Punta Ballena, la Caranta, y parte de la costa de Pampatar, si volteamos para atrás encontramos el Santuario del Santísimo Cristo del Buen Viaje, el Palacio Municipal de Maneiro, la Casa de la Cultura Manuel Plácido Maneiro y la Casa de la Aduana de Pampatar.
At the top of the castle, there are four guard posts, two facing the sea and the other two facing the castle entrance, which served as lookouts to give the alarm and confront the enemy. At the bottom, we can see a row of cannons arranged in such a way as to protect the bay from possible threats.

Arriba en el castillo encontramos cuatro garitas de vigilancia, dos viendo al mar y las otras dos hacia la entrada del castillo, que servían de vigilancia y poder dar el alerta y enfrentar al enemigo. En la parte inferior podemos divisar una hilera de cañones dispuestos de esa manera para proteger la bahía de posibles amenazas.
Este fue mi recorrido por el Castillo de San Carlos de Borromeo, espero que lo hayan disfrutado al igual que yo y hasta otra oportunidad.
