Hygiene and sanitation, My simple principle that stuck with me

We have to keep our environment clean, a dirty environment attracts diseases, and that's why hygiene and sanitation are very important topics in this world. Sometimes we focus more on curing diseases, but the truth is that many of those sicknesses wouldn’t even exist if we practiced proper hygiene and kept our environment clean. Over time, I’ve come to realize that prevention really is better than cure.

One of my personal principle is something simple but effective, never leaving stagnant water around. Growing up, I saw how mosquitoes breed in dirty water, and it becomes the main source of malaria. So anytime I see containers or buckets with water just sitting outside, I make sure to pour it out. It may look small, but it goes a long way in preventing sickness.

Another sanitation habit I try to follow is waste separation. I don’t always get it right, but I try to keep plastics aside from food waste. Plastics don’t decompose easily, and when you mix them with leftover food, it just becomes a mess. Keeping them apart makes disposal easier and cleaner.

Also, I sweep my environment every morning. It might sound old fashioned, but I grew up in a home where my parents insisted on it, and now it’s part of me. A clean compound in the morning just sets the tone for the whole day. Sometimes when I skip it, the place looks untidy and I don’t feel comfortable.

Personal hygiene is another area I don’t joke with. For me, bathing twice daily is a must. It keeps the body fresh and reduces the chances of skin infections. Washing hands before eating and after using the restroom may look like little habits, but they save us from stomach upsets and food-borne diseases. I also try not to bite my nails, because you can never really know what germs are hiding there.

One more thing I do is always cover food and water properly. Flies move from dirty places to our meals, and if you allow them to perch on your food, you are literally inviting diseases. Using food covers and clean containers is a very simple but effective hack.

At the end of the day, sanitation is not something we should treat lightly. When you take care of your environment, you are also taking care of your health. Sometimes it’s not about waiting for government to provide everything, it starts with us as individuals. A little effort every day makes a big difference.

I believe if everyone practiced good hygiene and sanitation, many diseases we spend money treating would not even have the chance to exist.
