I am an eternal lover and defender of our music -both popular and folkloric- and I consider it one of the greatest cultural legacies with which we Cubans have been blessed by our ancestors, both from Africa and Spain. That is why we musicians "del patio" must be zealous guardians of these cultural values; since we have the responsibility to carry them around the world with the dignity with which our elders did it in the past. And I am referring -with the immense respect they deserve- to: Celia Cruz, Ignacio Villa "Bola de Nieve", Benny Moré, Bebo Valdez, Dámaso Pérez Prado, Antonio Machín and the mythical percussionist and composer Chano Pozo just to mention some of our musical Glorias in a list that would be endless.
One of the wonderful gifts that has brought me to have learned "the little I know" of music, is to have done it from the hand of great percussionists and creators of the street, and now to be able to transmit that knowledge with the same passion and spontaneity with which they were given to me. Remembering and paying homage at the same time to those great and authentic masters, a little distant now in time, but very present forever in my heart and in the memory of their followers and of all the people who love and know music and who always applauded them with all their affection, respect and admiration.

Teaching -for me- is in my blood, it is part of a family tradition as I have explained in other posts. My father and his four brothers were teachers graduated from the Normal School of Santa Clara, that's where he and my mother, who also graduated and was a very recognized, respected and loved elementary school teacher throughout her life, met.
I have had the immense good fortune to be able to teach the "Elementary Technique of Las Tumbadoras and our popular and folkloric rhythms" to friends from various countries, both individually and in collective workshops. I enjoy these workshops very much because the children always participate accompanied by their parents and this interactive and familiar learning through didactic games -beyond how fun and dynamic it can be- is very effective, motivating and deep bonds are made between parents and children through music.
With the COVID - as you all know - the world came to a standstill and therefore these much needed meetings had been interrupted, but fortunately we are now resuming them little by little. On this occasion; we shared a cool Sunday afternoon with a nice French family that was very interested in learning about our culture through stories, songs, drums, magic and the unparalleled beauty of our Cuban popular music, with a significant accent on African and Spanish roots.
We culminated the unique evening with a tasty "CONGA" and a choreography in the form of a little train led by our @saraleo (the main dancer) where we "Arrollamos" all... Amidst laughter and singing!!!!!

Buenos días estimados en Hive...
Soy un eterno enamorado y defensor de nuestra música -tanto popular como folklórica- y la considero uno de los mayores legados culturales con el que hemos sido bendecidos los cubanos por parte de nuestros ancestros, tanto de África como de España. Por eso los músicos "del patio" debemos ser celosos guardianes de estos valores culturales; ya que tenemos la responsabilidad de pasearlos por el mundo con la dignidad con la que lo hicieron en el pasado nuestros mayores. Y me estoy refiriendo -con el inmenso respeto que se merecen- a: Celia Cruz, Ignacio Villa "Bola de Nieve", Benny Moré, Bebo Valdez, Dámaso Pérez Prado, Antonio Machín y el mítico percusionista y compositor Chano Pozo por solo mencionar a algunas de nuestras Glorias musicales en una lista que sería interminable.
Uno de los regalos maravillosos que me ha traído el haber aprendido "lo poquito que sé" de la música, es haberlo hecho de la mano de grandes percusionistas y creadores de la calle, y el ahora poder transmitir esos conocimientos con la misma pasión y espontaneidad con que la que me fueron dados. Recordando y homenajeando a la vez a esos grandes y auténticos maestros un poco alejados ya en el tiempo, pero muy presentes por siempre en mi corazón y en la memoria de sus seguidores y de todo un pueblo amante y conocedor de la música que siempre los aplaudió con todo su cariño, respeto y admiración.

El enseñar -para mí- está en mi sangre, es parte de una tradición familiar como he explicado en otros post. Mi padre y sus cuatro hermanos fueron maestros graduados de la escuela Normal de Santa Clara, allí se conocieron él y mi madre, quien también se graduó y fue una maestra de primaria muy reconocida, respetada y querida durante toda su vida.
He tenido la inmensa suerte de poder enseñar la "Técnica Elemental de Las Tumbadoras y nuestros ritmos populares y folklóricos" a amigos de varios países, tanto de manera individual, como en talleres colectivos. Disfruto mucho estos talleres porque siempre participan los niños acompañados de sus padres y este aprendizaje interactivo y familiar por medio de juegos didácticos -más allá de lo divertido y dinámico que puede ser- es muy efectivo, motivador y se hacen lazos profundos entre padres e hijos a través de la música.
Con la COVID -como todos saben- el mundo se paralizó y por ende también se habían interrumpido estos encuentros tan necesarios, ahora por suerte ya los estamos retomando poco a poco. En esta ocasión; compartimos una fresca tarde de domingo con una simpática familia Francesa que se mostró muy interesada en conocer nuestra cultura a través de las historias, las canciones, los tambores, la magia y la belleza sin par de nuestra música popular cubana, con un acento significativo en las raíces africanas y españolas.
Culminamos la singular velada con una sabrosa "CONGA" y una coreografía en forma de trencito dirigida por nuestra @saraleo (la bailadora mayor) dónde "Arrollamos" todos... ¡Entre risas y cantos!!!
Arrollar: Es una forma específica de bailar "La Conga" en Cuba en las festividades de la calle o carnavales.
