By train to Tashkent: a first day you won't forget

My mother and I stayed in Kazakhstan for exactly three days, then boarded the train and headed straight to Tashkent. I'd been here before—check out my old posts if you're interested. But for my mother, everything was new, and she fell in love with the city at first sight.

A Green Oasis and the Plov of Dreams

Tashkent greeted us with a sea of greenery and parks at every turn. My mother couldn't stop gazing: "So many trees, so much shade!" But hunger is no match for our hunger, so the first thing we did was head for some plov. We found a trusted spot across the street from the train station—and yes, it was the same plov worth flying halfway across the continent for.

A Memorial That Leaves You Indifferent

Next to the plov stand was the Memorial Complex to the Victims of Repression. We decided to stop in—and we didn't regret it. A whole scientific research museum operates here: staff delve into archives, collect evidence, and publish books—from serious monographs to fiction. In the evening, the park turns into a cool oasis: the shade of the trees provides relief from the heat, and the silence helps you comprehend what you've seen.

Magic City after sunset

That same day, we stopped by Magic City (I wrote about it a couple of years ago, but it's especially beautiful in the evening). Lights, illumination, a lake with paddleboats and boats. And most importantly, the musical fountain! The louder you scream, the higher the water shoots. The girls in the park put on a real concert: they screamed so loudly that the jets of water shot higher than the roofs of the neighboring houses. My mom and I laughed until we cried.

Summary of the first day

We were overwhelmed with impressions. Our legs were buzzing from the train, our eyes were drooping, but the smiles never left our faces. Tomorrow we'll take a break, but we still have six more Uzbek days ahead. The main goal is Samarkand with its ancient mosques and madrassas. To be continued!
