Hello hello everyone! Today I'm here to show you one of the natural wonders of the city of Matanzas, Cuba, while I share a bit of its history and my personal experience there.

Bellamar Caves, a beautiful site full of underground nature.
The Bellamar Caves were discovered in the colonial year by a Spaniard who had purchased the land, which at the time was covered in stones used to make lime (a construction material). The story goes that one day, one of his workers—a Chinese man—dropped his pickaxe into an open hole and couldn’t retrieve it by hand. Some time later, the Spaniard went to investigate, and upon entering the hole, he had the privilege of being the first human to lay eyes on this underground paradise.
He then began the work of preparing the site to become a tourist attraction. Stairs were installed (the foundations of the original ones can still be found beneath the newer ones built for better access). At first, the caves were lit with torches, then with oil lamps, and eventually with modern lighting, reflecting the technological evolution of illumination over the years. There are still remnants of places where lamps were once placed on the walls, and some areas of the ceiling are stained black from the smoke of torches and oil lamps!

Las cuevas de bellamar, un sitio hermoso lleno de naturaleza bajo tierra. Las cuevas de bellamar fueron descubiertas en el epoca colonial por un español ya que este habia comprado el terreno que en aquel momento estaba lleno de piedras para hacer cal (un material de construccion). La historia cuenta que un dia uno de sus trabajadores, un chino se le cae su pico dentro de un agujero abierto y que no logra recuparlo con sus manos. Tiempo despues el español fue a averiguar de que se trataba y al adentrarse en el agujero tuvo el privilegio de ser los primeros ojos humanos que vieron este paraiso subterraneo.
Alli el comenzó su labor de ambientar el lugar para convertirlo en sitio turístico, colocaron escaleras (que aún se encuentran los cimientos de estas bajo las nuevas que se hicieron para mejor acceso) primero fue alumbrado con antorchas y con el tiempo despues a lamparas de aceite hasta llegar a las lamparas actuales pasando por la evolucion tecnologica con respecto a la iluminacion con el paso de los años. Todavia quedan restos de algunos lugares donde fueron puestas algunas lamparas en las paraderes y algunas zonas estan teñidas de negro el techo por el humo de antorchas y lamparas de aceite!

Later on, this site changed hands several times, but its initial opening was so impactful that it welcomed two thousand visitors. And that’s a huge event, especially considering that back then, the internet didn’t exist.
This place is thousands of years old, since stalagmites grow just 1 cm every 100 years—and there are massive stalagmites like these.

Despues este sitio pasó por varios dueños, pero su primera apertura fue tan conmocionante que albergó este sitio a dos mil personas. Y este es un acontecimiento enorme sabiendo que en aquellos tiempos no existía internet.
Este lugar tiene miles de años de antigüedad, ya que las stalagmitas crecen 1cm cada 100 años y hay enormes stalagmitas como estas.

There’s the legend of the Fountain of Love, which says that if you wet your lips and kiss, you will have a pure and sincere love—and you will never be separated.

The Fountain of Divorce—I’m not sure how that one works since no one in my group wanted to get divorced that day haha.
And then there’s the Fountain of Money, which has now dried up.
There’s also the legend of a foreign girl who entered a very narrow hole that leads to another cave, one that’s difficult to access and not open to the public. She was never seen again. Some say she traveled to another place from there—but these are just legends.

La fuente del divorcio, esta no se como funciona ya que nadie de mi grupo queria divorciarse ese dia ajja.
Y la del dinero que actualmente se secó.
Esta la leyenda de una muchacha extranjera que metió en un hueco muy estrecho al cual al otro lado hay otra cueva de dificil acceso la cual no se permite ni se puede pasar al menos no el publico y ella nunca volvió a aparecer dicen que de ahí viajó a otro lado. Pero solo son leyendas.

The cave is full of chambers, most of which aren't open to the public in order to preserve the site's natural state and because they're hard to access. I really wish I could go in because I'm super curious 🥹. But it's not allowed.

La cueva esta llená de camaras la mayoria no abiertas al publico para conservar la naturaleza del sitio y porque son de dificil acceso, realmente ojala se pudiera entrar porque me da mucha curiosidad🥹. Pero no se puede.

There’s another tour called the Sponge Excursion, but they’re not running it either. For this one, you wear a helmet with a light because that area isn’t artificially lit like the other chambers.
Español Existe otra excursion que se llama la excursion de las esponjas pero tampoco lo están realizando. Este es con una luz que lleves en un casco ya que esta zona no esta iluminada artificialmente como las otras camaras.

In the caves, there are some stalagmites that resemble certain shapes, but you really have to use your imagination. Our guide, quite humorously, told us how one of the stalagmites was called “my mother-in-law’s hand,” another one—I can’t remember the name—and then there was “the Buddha” and “the dancer.”

En las cuevas hay algunas stalagmitas que imitan formas de algunas cosas, pero hay que ponen mucho de la imaginacion. Nuestro guia graciosamente nos contaba como una de las stalagmitas la llamaban la mano de mi suegra, otra no recuerdo el nombre, tambien el buda y la bailarina.

At first, being down there made me a little scared because I don’t like enclosed spaces—they make me feel like I can’t breathe. But once I calmed down and took deep breaths, I had a great time. It’s a very humid place. The guide explained that the openings we passed through in the cave used to be freshwater channels that gradually drained over time. When the Spaniard prepared the site to open it to the public, they had to use a water pump from that era—though I don’t remember the name of the type—because some passageways still had water in them.
These stalagmites form due to the lack of air and oxygen in the cave, which causes the water to fall much more slowly than usual. The droplets take a long time to descend and get trapped, gradually creating the shape of the stone.

Estar alla abajo al principio me dio un poco de miedo ya que los lugares cerrados no me gustan porque siento como si me faltara el aire pero solo con tranquilizarme y respirar hondo la pasé muy bien. Es un lugar muy humedo, cuenta el guía que los huecos para pasar por la cueva eran canales de agua dulce que con el tiempo fueron drenandose y que cuando el español hizo el lugar para abrirlo al publico tuvieron que tener una bomba de agua de las de aquel tiempo no recuerdo el nombre del tipo de bomba de agua ya que algunos pasillos todavia tenian agua.
Estas stalagmitas se forman por la falta de aire y oxigeno en la cueva haciendo que el agua no caiga a la velocidad que debe y demore muchisimo y se retiene la gota creando la forma de esa piedra.

I found this excursion incredibly interesting—even though the place was cold, the temperature was actually quite pleasant. You end up sweaty because of how humid it is.
