"Gentleman Charles" de Humberto Arenal / Review (Eng/Esp)

Humberto Arenal is a Cuban writer, author of the short story **Gentleman Charles**, of which I will give you my impressions because it led me to reflect on the transcendental nature of life. The protagonist of the story is Doña Clarita, an artist who reached old age submerged in depression, longing for the days gone by, when she could dream of a future. Doña Clarita lived under the shadow of the gentleman Charles, who was her lover for many years. She had the hope that she would be his wife, but that never happened, reaching old age alone and bitter. The story has a great value at a background level because it presents a past that contrasts radically with the present, the Cuba that came to be considered a world-famous artistic scene, at the time of the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista, to become a nation with many shortages, where the dreams of several generations were disintegrated for ideological reasons. While Doña Clarita wishes to forget the time that has passed and that she could not take advantage of, beyond wearing jewelry, traveling and believing in false promises. Her present is discouraging, she lives alone and without time to reverse what happened. She is resigned, she waits for the end of her existence dragging her sorrows. On the other hand, Jacinto, who was the former chauffeur of Chevalier Charles, is the other main character who brings the story to life. He represents a contrast because he considers that his connection with the past is not so negative, for that reason he remains parked in yesterday, recalling his days as a servant and chauffeur, despite having demonstrated in his youth enough talent to become a professional baseball player in the United States. But he stayed in Cuba and now visits Doña Clarita every Sunday to talk about the past, while he praises Chevalier Charles, she silently longs to forget many memories, including an abortion. Jacinto believes that she also wants to cling to the past and does not notice the signs of repulsion, indifference and rejection that she produces while they talk. The dialogues proposed by the narrator are very well thought out because they provide information to fully understand what is proposed in the story.  [Source](https://pixabay.com/es/photos/postales-recuerdo-7865295/) Another interesting aspect of the story is Jacinto's suggestion to Doña Clarita to go to a medium and thus try to talk to the deceased Charles and not feel so lonely, even naming Alan Kardec, considered a precursor of spiritualism, as the basis for his proposal. Here the contrast between the two characters is intensified as the beliefs and how they influence thinking are glimpsed. Jacinto never realizes the time that has passed, neither contextually nor chronologically, since he is convinced that Doña Clarita shares his way of appreciating reality, but she chooses solitude to continue listening to the reiteration of a splendorous past while living in a miserable present, a direct allusion to the political-ideological discourse used in Cuba for decades.

Humberto Arenal es un escritor cubano, autor del cuento **El caballero Charles**, del cual les daré mis impresiones porque me llevó a reflexionar sobre lo trascendental de la vida. La protagonista del relato es doña Clarita, una artista que llegó a la vejez sumergida en la depresión, añorando los días pasados, cuando podía soñar con un futuro. Doña Clarita vivió bajo la sombra del caballero Charles, quien fue su amante por muchos años. Ella tenía la esperanza de que sería su esposa, pero eso nunca sucedió, llegando a la vejez sola y amargada. El cuento tiene un gran valor a nivel de trasfondo porque presenta un pasado que contrasta radicalmente con el presente, la Cuba que llegó a ser considerada un escenario artístico de fama mundial, en la época de la dictadura de Fulgencio Batista, a convertirse en una nación con muchas carencias, donde los sueños de varias generaciones se desintegraron por motivos ideológicos. Mientras doña Clarita desea olvidar el tiempo transcurrido que no pudo aprovechar, más allá de lucir joyas, viajar y creer falsas promesas. Su presente es desalentador, vive sola y sin tiempo para revertir lo que sucedió. Se resigna, espera el final de su existencia arrastrando sus pesares. Por su parte, Jacinto, quien fue chofer del caballero Charles, es el otro personaje principal que da vida a la historia. Representa un contraste porque considera que su conexión con el pasado no es tan negativa, por tal razón permanece estacionado en el ayer, rememorando sus días como sirviente y chofer, a pesar de haber demostrado en su juventud el talento suficiente para llegar a ser beisbolista profesional en los Estados Unidos. Pero se quedó en Cuba y ahora visita cada domingo a doña Clarita para hablar del pasado, mientras él alaba al caballero Charles, ella en silencio anhela olvidar muchos recuerdos, incluyendo un aborto. Jacinto cree que ella también desea aferrarse al pasado y no advierte las señales de repulsión, indiferencia y rechazo que ella produce mientras hablan. Los diálogos propuestos por el narrador están muy bien planteados porque aportan información para comprender a plenitud lo propuesto en la historia.  [Fuente](https://pixabay.com/es/photos/postales-recuerdo-7865295/) Otro aspecto interesante del cuento es la sugerencia de Jacinto a doña Clarita para que acuda a una médium y de esta forma intentar hablar con el difunto Charles y no sentirse tan sola, inclusive nombra a Alan Kardec, considerado un precursor del espiritismo, como base de su propuesta. Acá se intensifica el contraste entre ambos personajes en tanto se deja entrever las creencias y cómo influyen en el pensamiento. Jacinto nunca cae en cuenta del tiempo transcurrido ni a nivel contextual ni cronológico ya que está convencido de que doña Clarita comparte su forma de apreciar la realidad, pero ella elige la soledad a seguir escuchando la reiteración de un pasado esplendoroso mientras vive un miserable presente, directa alusión al discurso político-ideológico que se utilizó en Cuba durante décadas.
