"Midnight Mass", the art of suggesting and not saying (Eng/Esp)

I return to give my impressions on the story "Midnight Mass" by the Brazilian writer Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis. This narrator presents us in his story what would be the customs, among them the conversations, in the XIX century to present us in a very well achieved way the sexual awakening in the youth. The tension is maintained throughout the narration, the insinuations are presented and the reader is kept with suggestions. The story is called Midnight Mass because it takes place on the eve of a Catholic ritual commemorating the birth of the baby Jesus. Precisely it works as an excuse for a young man, who has been invited to the event, to remain seated in the living room of the residence where he spends the night, waiting for it to begin. She knows this and resigns herself to the point of accepting the mistress and allowing her husband to leave the house once a week. The description of the characters and the period in which the story is set brings the reader closer to a circumstantial context where morality can be seen as a priority, above lustful impulses. The story takes an unexpected turn when Concepción approaches the young man alone and initiates a suggestive conversation in a low voice in the middle of the night, thus initiating a game of seduction that is accentuated by the mysterious and dark atmosphere. To insinuate and not to say is an art and in this case Machado de Assis succeeds in reproducing a dialogue between the two characters that gradually approaches sexual tension. Social conventions become a barrier, so this episode remains as an anecdote that enlivens the memory. The story seems to have a simple structure, but in reality, through the characters, the narrator introduces us to psychology and human nature without directing us directly to that goal. It is only after the episode that the young man manages to understand that the encounter was not a chance encounter but an attempt at seduction; men tend to mature later than women. Also presented is the fact that Concepción, in her 30s, is looked down upon by her husband, an older man who found a younger lover. These reflections, made from everyday events, are usually raw material to conceive very good narratives and in this case Machado de Assis succeeded.

Vuelvo para dar mis impresiones sobre el relato "Misa de Gallo" del escritor brasileño Joaquim María Machado de Assis. Este narrador nos presenta en su cuento lo que serían las costumbres, entre ellas las conversaciones, en el siglo XIX para presentarnos de forma muy bien lograda el despertar sexual en la juventud. Las tensión se mantiene a lo largo de la narración, se presentan las insinuaciones y se mantiene al lector a base de sugerencias. El cuento recibe el nombre de Misa de Gallo porque se desarrolla en vísperas de un ritual católico que conmemora el nacimiento del niño Jesús. Justamente funciona como excusa para que un joven, que ha sido invitado al evento, permanezca a la espera de su inicio sentado en la sala de la residencia donde pernocta. Solitario y en la tranquilidad de la noche se presenta una inesperada compañía femenina cuyas intenciones no logra descifrar. Ella lo sabe y se resigna, a tal punto de aceptar a la amante y permitir que su esposo se ausente de casa una vez a la semana. La descripción de los personajes y la época en la que se inserta el relato aproxima al lector hasta un contexto circunstancial donde la moral puede verse como prioridad, por encima de los impulsos lujuriosos. El relato toma un giro inesperado cuando Concepción aborda al joven a solas e inicia una sugerente conversación en baja voz en medio de la noche, iniciando de esta forma un juego de seducción que se acentúa por la atmósfera misteriosa y oscura. Insinuar y no decir es un arte y en este caso Machado de Assis logra reproducir un diálogo entre ambos personajes que paulatinamente se aproxima a la tensión sexual. Las convenciones sociales se vuelven una barrera, así que este episodio queda como una anécdota que aviva la memoria. El cuento parece tener una estructura simple, pero en realidad, a través de los personajes, el narrador nos presenta la psicología y la naturaleza humana sin dirigirnos directamente hacia ese objetivo. Solamente después del episodio, el joven logró comprender que aquel encuentro no fue casual sino un intento de seducción, los hombres suelen madurar tiempo después que las mujeres. También se presenta el hecho de que Concepción, a sus 30 años, es menospreciada por su esposo, un hombre mayor que encontró una amante más joven. Estas reflexiones, hechas a partir de sucesos cotidianos suelen ser materia prima para concebir muy buenas narraciones y en este caso Machado de Assis lo logró.
