The highlighted games feature either brilliant tactics, resilience, or good upsets. Game winners will share in the reward for their games being featured in this post. Rewards would be paid in Liquid.

Please don't forget that if you feel confident about any of your games during the Saturday weekly event, drop a link in the comment section of the report post next Sunday.

Game 1

@maestroask vs @madchess64

This previous round of the Saturday Hivechess Tournament had Madchess64 win her first game against our most frequent winner, Maestroask. If you noticed, I used the pronoun 'her' because Madchess64 is a female chess player and one of the strongest in Nigeria, as well as one of the few ladies who play our Saturday Hivechess Tournament.

As usual, expect Maestroask to play his unusual lines to throw his opponent off balance like he does in all his games. This setup from the above position is from the chess opening called the Hungarian Opening: other variation. In my opinion, not a popular opening at all.

18. Rc4??

image.png

Black has the advantage at this point. White plays Nc4 on move 18, placing the knight on a misplaced square. But black could not find the winning continuation, the move a3, to further enhance her pawn. Instead, she went for axb,3, which took the advantage for -2.07 to -0.8. An equalizing balance.

35. Qd2

image.png

The decisive advantage for black came in after white played the move Qd2. Now, black has a means to penetrate the position with the move Qh2, like she played, but Qg3 is stronger as Nf4 follows pursuit, putting it hard for white to defend properly against the attack that will be coming from the black queen and knight.

46. Rxd2

image.png

With this move, black simplifies the position with rook capture of the white king, and once white responds with the only best move, Kxd2, it becomes obviously clear that the position was winning for black at this point.

Game 2

@tangibleay vs @southgamer

Southgamer performed excellently in the 13th round of the Saturday Hivechess tournament. He finished with a total of 39 points, all 10 wins and only a single draw, making it the first time he has won the Saturday Hivechess Tournament. He defeated strong tournament players like Maestroask, Jaki, and, in this game highlight, he defeated Tangible_ay.

image.png

Both players are principled players when it comes to playing their chess openings, which is why you can see they played the Pirc defense through the position setup on the board above. b6 is considered to be an inferior move by the computer engine, but the idea behind the move is not all bad. Simply to develop the bishop on c8 to the b7 square, and there it will control the longest diagonal on the chessboard.

13. Rhg1??

image.png

This is the blunder white made that led to his problems and defeat in this game. The move allows the white bishop on d3 to get trapped, and on black's next move, he takes out the bishop. Try to see if you can find the move.

c5!

image.png

At this point, the bishop on d3 is trapped and has no square to run, making it a dead piece.

22. Rxc3! image.png

Black did not only stop there, he went on to launch an attack on the white king, who had castled to the queenside. Black got a decisive position, which allowed the rook sacrifice to become valid. Once white captures back with bxc3, the white king becomes exposed to attacks from the black pieces.

image.png

The sac led to this, and at this point, it was hard to defend against the attacks anymore.
