Why do some people find pleasure in possessing things that are not theirs? Some even go to the extend of causing bodily harm to others just to claim what is not theirs to begin with. Am saying this with a very heavy heart, because it's very painful and annoying to watch such things happen and you have no control over it at that moment.
Just last week Tuesday, I had an experience, though it wasn't personal because it did not directly affect me but it affected some neighbours of mine. That evening, we were in our compound gisting with a few colleagues of mine till around 9 pm, then we entered our rooms to rest for the night. I wasn't able to sleep immediately, so I picked my phone and began surfing the internet. I was awake till around 1:42 am when I suddenly heard the sky rumbling as if it was going to rain, I stood up immediately and went outside to pack my clothes that were dried on the line.
I came back inside afterwards and lie down to sleep, when it was just few minutes to 2am. I slept for just approximately 1 hour 15 minutes when I woke up again to a loud bang on the door. Luckily it wasn't our door or my landlords door, because I knew that we had closed our gate that night before sleeping and no one will bang on doors like that if not for a particular issue. Lo and behold, it was our neighbours compound, and we soon realised that it was armed robbers terrorising the compound at that late hour. The compound has 12 self contained rooms and at that moment, all the tenants were present in the house.
The armed robbers came in numbers holding cutlasses and guns. They entered the compound by climbing over the fence and entered every single room in that compound stealing mostly smart phones, laptops and few cash that were available. In the compound, two POS (Point of Sale) operators were present and one of them got severely injured with the cutlass because he refused to allow the armed robbers into his room, as he was trying to protect his wife and children. He sustained injuries to the head, body and hands as a result of it.
No one in the compound screamed for help and my landlord tried to contact some security personnel that he knew to inform them of the situation, but all to no avail. That was how those armed robbers succeeded in their operation and left before sunrise. The morning came, we were able to fully grasp the story of what happened, and a crucial part of it was that, one of the POS operators had received a huge sum of money which was approximately 2 million naira that same evening from a garri production company, and information reached those guys and they forcefully came to steal it and cause chaos also.
That same morning, investigations into the matter began, immediately the police came to the site of the incident.
I don't know whether there is progress in the case, whether the culprit were caught, but this level of insecurity and selling of information is very alarming.
I hope more rapid response by security agencies when it comes to such situations be optimise and improved. Thank you and have a wonderful evening
