Domestic violence is a very agonizing problem that afflicts most families globally. It can be described as a scenario in which an individual in a household applies fear, exertion, or physical abuse on another. I was greatly impressed when I heard the MCGI dialogue on domestic violence since this is one of the subjects that kills peace, love and unity in most homes.
I also took my time to read it thoroughly and I understood that domestic violence is not only a societal issue but also a spiritual one. It is contrary to the will of God to the families.
Domestic violence may manifest itself in a variety of ways. It is not merely in case any person is whipped. It may also be emotional like a person ruining another person by using harsh words to destroy his/her confidence. It may even be monetary, as one spouse denies the other or spends money in order to dominate the other.
I was pondering it, when I recalled that God intended the family to be a place where one can feel safe and comfortable. In the Bible, Ephesians 5: 25, it states that husbands should love their wives just as Christ loved the church. This bible reveals that on any home love must be the core, not fear or maltreatment.
I also got to know that the domestic violence may be based on anger, pride or lack of understanding. At times individuals are raised in a setting where violence is customary, and they take it to marriage. And yet the Bible in Proverbs 14:29 informs us, that he that is sluggish in wrath is of great understanding.
This implies that self-control is an indicator of wisdom. Violence will never solve the problem however angry one may be. I do feel that in case people adhere to the teachings of Christ, a lot of domestic violence cases can be prevented.
The other crucial lesson I have learnt during the MCGI teaching is that victims of domestic violence are not to be silent. Shame or fear leaves many people silent, however this does not help the pain but the silence only prolongs the pain. A request to assist is not an indication of frailty.
Even Jesus himself says in Matthew 11:28, come unto me, all ye that labour and are burdened, and I will rest ye. This makes us remember that God is concerned with our misery and desires that we should have peace and be healed.
Domestic violence causes home breaks, emotionally abuses children and destroys trust. Love, patience, understanding and respect should be encouraged in case we really desire stable families. I think that the role should be taken by all the religious leaders, friends, relatives, and even the whole society.
The messages of the MCGI discourse enabled me to realize that the home must be a refuge, rather than a war zone. And through the guidance of God, families will be able to mend and develop love.
