It is an activity which deprives peace, destroys families and destroys the future of many. It is not a simple task to quit drug addiction, yet it is quite possible as long as an individual wants to change and makes God offer assistance. With the help of the Word of God, the prayer, discipline, and the support of the right, it is possible to escape the chain of drugs and start a new life. The initial process towards drug addiction recovery is the acceptance of the problem. It is difficult to accept the fact that one is addicted, and the truth is the basis of the healing process. In John 8: 32, the Bible says, And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Once an individual gets to acknowledge the reality of his/her addiction, he/she has allowed the help of God to enter the picture. I was taught that all pretending or denial of the situation gives the addiction more strength. However, once I made up my mind to confront it, I was able to proceed with the subsequent steps. Secondly, the best way to fight addiction is to ask God to assist. Drug addiction is not a physical issue only, the mind and spirit are also affected. Addiction is one way through which the devil traps people in sin and destroys their bodies which are the temples of God. According to the Bible in 1 Corinthians 6:19- 20, it suggests, that you do not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit? It is not yours, you were sold at a price. This verse brings to our mind that it is not the will of God to destroy our body by using drugs. By praying in earnestness, seeking the favor of God and His power, it is possible to eliminate that kind of addiction. Bad habits are to be substituted with good habits as the third step. When an individual is lazy or in the midst of temptation, then addiction increases. However, when mind and body are occupied with good things, the temptation of taking drugs is less strong. I learned that reading the Bible, attending fellowship, work and community service are effective means of renewing the mind. Romans chapter twelve verse two reads, Be not conformed to this world: But be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind. The Word of God aids in purifying the heart of the worldly and substituting with Godly desires. The other step that is important is to stay out of bad company. In most cases, addictions begin and survive due to our friends. In 1 Corinthians 15:33, the Bible cautions that one should not be fooled: wicked communication defames good behavior. When an individual is really willing to be free, he/she must avoid people or in places that promote drug use. It is preferable to walk with God individually than to walk with many people and get into destruction. It is beneficial to be surrounded by godly friends and a support system. Peacefulness and the push to continue were gained when I started to hang around individuals who love God. In the recovery, self-control and patience are also important. Drug addiction is not something that can be overcome easily. The temptations and weak moments will come but an individual should remain strong. Spiritual strength is gained through prayer, fasting and daily devotion. In Philippians 4: 13, the Bible states that, I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. This implies that despite the feeling of strong desire to assume drugs, God can provide the power to say no. Day by day, not to give in is a win that needs to be rejoiced. Moreover, forgiveness and hope have to be included in the process. Most addicts are full of guilt or shame because of what they in the past did. But God is merciful. In Isaiah 1: 18 God says, though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. This implies that regardless the degree of the addiction, it can be forgiven and a second chance is given. I understood that the only way to feel unworthy is to cling onto the guilt, but when God loves one, peace and freedom are guaranteed. Lastly, relating your story to others to aid their recovery can empower your recovery. In Revelation 12:11 the bible says, they overcame him through the blood of the Lamb, and also through the word of their testimony. When an individual speaks of how God has assisted him/her to quit addiction, it is a motivating factor to other people to seek the same redemption. It can also make the man remember how much he/ she has gone and how faithful God is. Finally, the drug addict can conquer the addiction with faith, prayer, self-control and the aid of the Godly community. The Word of God is the most effective medicine which mends both the body and the spirit. It is possible that addiction is very strong but God is even stronger. I am sure that anyone will be able to get out of the rut of addiction and lead a peaceful, purpose-filled and free life, as long as that person never stops trusting His or her ability to do so. 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us: therefore, should any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. This is the ultimate hope of a person who wants to beat his/her drug addiction.
