Namaste!
Tradition and ritual are two inseparable things that have become part of the human race. There's no human race that has no tradition of their own not to talk about ritual.
One thing I have got to know about tradition is that it brings about togetherness and unity in our society and aside from that, it helps to preserve our rich cultural heritage from time to time and to me, this is a blessing to us human race.
Having said that, I would like to talk about a commonly celebrated festival cum tradition in my community.
The New Year celebration
Before I start to talk about this tradition, I would like to say that, most of the readers might be wondering within themselves and asking themselves the question, “Is this a tradition?”
Well, in response to what might be going through our minds, I would say the new year celebration in my locality is a tradition and this is because it's become our usual practice right from the start of our town that we celebrate our new year day in a grandstyle.
So, to go into the discussion properly, the new year celebration in my village is not just an ordinary celebration. It's a celebration that's full of fun.
During the time of this wonderful celebration, every member of the community both home and away used to come together to celebrate this festival together and one thing I so much cherish about the new year festival in my village is that, there's no religious or tribal disparity as everyone would come together to contribute their quota to the success of the celebration.
But before the D day of the celebration, there's a series of events that used to take place, such events includes, football competitions, Ayo Olopon, cultural dance competitions, local wrestling and a whole lot of games.
So, it's on the final day of the competition that each of the winners would be presented their awards and medals by the king of the town assisted by the president of the president of the town progressive union.
Aside from this, every indigenes and non-indigenes would be a witness to the grand finale of the celebration at the king's square and people from all walks of life and invited guests would also be present at the event.
Furthermore, the events which used to be colorful used to see people donning their various Aso-ebi (uniform) and it also used to come with people sharing and exchanging gifts amongst themselves.
Aside from this, the events like carnival used to draw investors to our community as there's a section of the events reserved for fund donation to the town.
After all these, the king would at the climax of the events pray for the peaceful co-existence among the people of the town and as well for fruitfulness of both the guests and the members of the town.
So, after the king's prayer comes the presentation of medals and entertainment. So, this new year festival celebration has become a tradition in my town and we always look forward to celebrating it. The coming one will be a special one and I'm using this opportunity to invite you to the new year celebration at the Ifedapo town square.
