Hello everyone,
I have been trying to understand lately what makes a movie great and what makes a movie horrible in the present 21st century. Is the use of actors or the direction of the storyline or lines from the script-writing? At this point, I do not know anymore. Things are changing, and that is fine, so it is only reasonable that movies change with the times as well. Or don't you agree?

We are no longer living in the era of black and white television anymore, not like I would know what that was like. Now, the 21st century of filmmaking has brought in a rush of new things. Like the use of CGIs, computer-generated images, to make movies that make it seem an animal or character that cannot talk in the real world, can give speeches in the movie. A typical example is Planet of the Apes and Jurassic Park. Although there were no speeches in Jurassic Park, at least the ones I watched in the past but I cannot say much about the latest one that has Scarlett Johansson as one of the leads, since I have not seen it yet.
At this point, I do not mind you asking me why I have all these in my intro. It all boils down to when I was talking to a friend of mine about movies, as that is one of the things we share in common. He spoke about how he was watching 21 and 22 Jump Street again, an old movie set in the late 2000s. Then he mentioned Ice Cube's performance and shouting in the movie. The way he spoke about Ice Cube is what sparked my memory about Wars of the World.
First, I asked him if he had watched the movie, War of the Worlds, and he said no, then I told him that there is currently a conversation online, considering the movie to be the worst movie ever made in 2025. Then my friend asked if it was the recent woke-ness adoption in movies was what caused the movie to flop. I did not have any answer for him because I do not know if there was any woke-ness in the movie, as I have not seen it.
One thing I know for sure is how strange I found the movie to be when I saw Ice Cube as the lead. Before you persecute my statement about Ice Cube being the lead, I am only saying this because I am used to the guy being in action-comedy or even comedy itself, so it was only shocking to see him in a serious movie with a serious title, War of the Worlds.
Movie fans and even people who have seen the movie did not hold back from sharing their thoughts about the movie on Twitter and online reviews. Here are some snapshots of reviews:
The movie got a lot of bad reviews, which led to it getting a 4% out of 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a 2.5 out of 10 on IMDb rating, and 6% of 100% from Metacritic.
I do not know about you all, but all this bad press on the movie even makes me eager to check out the movie just to know what is so bad about it. It is like Robert Greene says, even bad press is still a form of advertising.
So I put it to you all, what makes a movie bad to you, is it the characters or the lack of chemistry between them? I used to say that if a movie has a list of superstar actors with years of acting experience, there is no way the movie is going to be that bad. Well, I am not sure anymore.
If you have watched War of the Worlds, you can share your thoughts in the comments.
