Hello everyone! :)In my previous post I told you a little bit about my recently installed [solar power plant](https://peakd.com/hive/@schlees/solar-mining-i-recently-invested-in-a-balkony-solar-power-plant) and the same time I hammered the word "Mining" onto the chain. That is exactly what todays post is about as well, although what I am about to describe can not really be called serious mining - it could more likely be called low-cost home gambling.

Hallo allerseits! :)Im vorherigen Post haben ich euch ja ein wenig von meiner kürzlich installierten [Solaranlage](https://peakd.com/hive/@schlees/solar-mining-i-recently-invested-in-a-balkony-solar-power-plant) erzählt und dabei auch das Wort "Mining" auf die Chain gehämmert. Um genau das geht es im heutigen Post auch, wobei man was ich gleich beschreibe nicht als ernsthaftes Mining bezeichnen kann, man könnte es eher als kostengünstiges Glücksspiel bezeichnen.
I am sure the "NerdMiner" is already familiar to some of you. Here in Germany it is available starting at around €20 and offers an average performance of 75 KH/s with a power consumption of 1 watt.
But if you are going to get a new "toy" to play lottery, then it should have a little bit more performance and come with a reasonable power draw. This is why I decided on getting a "Bitaxe Gamma 601". Including shipping the total cost were about €90. It delivers between 1 and 1.2 TH/s at a power consumption of about 15 to 17 watts. Thats nothing special these days either, but it is clearly the better alternative to the "NerdMiner", which with its performance can really only be seen as a fun little gadget on the desk - personally, I can’t take it seriously at all, otherwise I would’ve bought one when it was released. Apparently there’s also a version that manages 980 KH/s, but yeah, that doesn’t change much. ^^
I mean, even the first USB-Sticks (ASIC USB Block Eruptor), which I used for mining Bitcoin when they were current, had a performance of about 333 Mh/s while consuming around 5 watts, if I remember correctly. Even those would therefore make far more sense than one of those "NerdMiners" and are available as "collectors items" for about €40 to €50... :D
Ich bin mir sicher, der "NerdMiner" ist einigen unter euch ein Begriff. Dieser ist hierzulande ab knapp 20€ erhältlich und bietet eine Leistung von durchschnittlich 75 KH/s bei einem Stromverbrauch von 1 Watt.
Aber wenn schon ein neues "Spielzeug" um Lotto zu spielen, dann schon mit etwas mehr Leistung bei einem angenehmen Stromverbrauch, weshalb ich mich für den "Bitaxe Gamma 601" entschieden habe. Dieser hat mich inkl. Versand knapp 90€ gekostet und bietet 1 bis 1.2 TH/s Leistung bei einem Stromverbrauch von knapp 15 bis 17 Watt. Das ist heutzutage auch keine besondere Leistung mehr, aber die deutlich bessere Alternative zum "NerdMiner", welcher anhand seiner Leistung ja wirklich nur als eine spaßige Kleinigkeit auf dem Schreibtisch angesehen werden kann - ernst nehmen kann ich den persönlich jedenfalls nicht, sonst hätte ich mir bei Release schon einen zugelegt. Es gibt wohl auch eine Version, die 980 KH/s schafft, aber ja, das ändert nicht viel.^^
Ich meine, selbst die ersten Sticks (ASIC USB Block Eruptor), die ich, als diese aktuell waren, für das minen von Bitcoin verwendet habe, lagen bei einer Leistung von knapp 333 Mh/s und haben dabei rund 5 Watt verbraucht, soweit ich mich richtig erinnere. Selbst die wären somit weitaus sinnvoller als einer dieser NerdMiner und sind mit knapp 40€ bis 50€ als "Sammlerstücke" erhältlich... :D
The 1 to 1.2 TH/s performance of the Bitaxe is of course also a joke by todays standards when it comes to almost all SHA256 coins. However, the chances of finding a block through solo mining are many times higher than with the NerdMiner, which in relation to solo mining still seems to be very popular based on its sales numbers - for whatever reason.
Die 1 bis 1.2 TH/s Leistung des Bitaxe ist für heutige Verhältnisse in Anbetracht der meisten SHA256 Coins natürlich ebenfalls ein Witz. Die Chancen beim Solo-Mining einen Block zu finden, sind aber um ein vielfaches höher, als mit besagten NerdMiner, welcher im Bezug auf Solo-Mining anhand der Verkaufszahlen nach wie vor und warum auch immer dennoch sehr beliebt zu sein scheint.

The good piece of hardware was tested with a currency that, like for some others as I am sure, is still known from back in the days and originated from a movement that focused on national cryptocurrencies - which to be honest has not worked out particularly well so far. ^^

) (EFL), also called "eGulden" (Scrypt), and the Icelanders launched the ["Auroracoin"](https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/auroracoin
) (AUR) (SHA256). Pakistan came up with [Pakcoin](https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/pakcoin
) (PAK), and alongside that the [Canada eCoin](https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/canada-ecoin
) (CDN) by the Canadians to name a few more i can think of at the moment emerged - just to add a little bit of cryptocurrency history to this.
Getestet wurde das gute Stück mit einer Währung, welche mir, wie sicher auch anderen, von früher noch bekannt ist und im Zuge einer Bewegung entstanden ist, welche auf nationale Kryptowährungen setzt - was um ehrlich zu sein bisher nicht sonderlich gut funktioniert hat.^^

Mining DEM of course is anything else but profitable and DEM can be "effectively" traded only on "Freiexchange" (a small exchange, already also nearly 10 years old). The total network hashrate is currently around 120 TH/s. For this reason, I also chose this currency to test the miner. I figured I could snack myself a block relatively quickly here and that it would not be completely for nothing, even if in the end it is only a few cents.
(1 Block DEM => 12.5 DEM => 0.0144375 $)
Which turned out to be true - after just under an hour I already had a notification on the miners display.
Das Mining von DEM ist jetzt natürlich alles andere als lukrativ und kann "effektiv" auch nur auf "Freiexchange" (eine kleine Börse, auch schon knapp 10 Jahre alt) gehandelt werden. Die Gesamtleistung des Netzwerks bewegt sich aktuell bei knapp 120 TH/s. Aus diesem Grund habe ich mich für den Test des Miners auch für diese Währung entschieden. Ich dachte mir, dass ich hier relativ schnell einen Block ergattern kann und das alles dann doch nicht zu 100% umsonst war, auch, wenn es am Ende nur um wenige Cent geht.

Womit ich auch recht behalten habe - nach knapp einer Stunde hatte ich bereits eine Meldung auf dem Display.

In the end, I decided not to go for solo mining Bitcoin, but for now for [eCash](https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/ecash) (XEC), since I see significantly higher chances that the miner will find a block when mining XEC, and if that happens, it is immediately $30+ as well. I will just let the little guy mine for a few months and keep you updated on possible results.
eCash (XEC) (known as Bitcoin Cash ABC (BCHA) before its rebranding) originated from a split of [Bitcoin Cash](https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/bitcoin-cash) (BCH), which itself is a Bitcoin fork - to deepen the history lesson regarding cryptocurrencies a bit more.
Entschieden habe ich mich letztlich aber nicht für das Solo-Mining von Bitcoin, sondern vorerst für [eCash](https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/ecash) (XEC), da ich hier deutlich höhere Chancen sehe, dass der Miner einen Block findet und sofern das der Fall ist, sind es auch direkt 30$+. Ich lass das kleine Kerlchen jetzt so einfach mal ein paar Monate minen und halte euch auf dem laufenden.
**eCash** (XEC) (Vor dem Rebranding unter Bitcoin Cash ABC (BCHA) bekannt) entstand anbei durch eine Abspaltung von [Bitcoin Cash](https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/bitcoin-cash) (BCH), welcher selbst ein Bitcoin Fork ist - um den Geschichtsunterricht hinsichtlich Kryptowährungen noch etwas zu vertiefen.

Setting up the miner really was incredibly easy. You just connect to the Wi-Fi of the Bitaxe Gamma 601, enter the IP address shown on the display in your browser, fill in your Wi-Fi data into the form on the page and your miner is online. Afterwards you can set further settings via the miners interface (AxeOS), such as over-/underclocking, fan speed and of course the settings regarding your pool of choice.
Das Einrichten des Miners war anbei kinderleicht. Ihr verbindet euch mit dem W-Lan des Bitaxe Gamma 601, gebt in eurem Browser die auf dem Display zu sehende IP-Adresse ein, tragt in der Maske die Daten eures W-Lan ein und schon ist der Miner online. Anschließend könnt ihr über die Oberfläche des Miners (AxeOS) weitere Einstellungen, wie unter anderem das über-/untertakten, das regulieren der Lüftergeschwindigkeit und natürlich auch die Einstellungen bezüglich eures Pools vornehmen.
