Friday is here! And #newtunes, fresh music selection, too. From everything I've listened to this week, this selection has stayed with me and will continue for the weekend and beyond! One of the songs may even be a hit; you never know.

Stereolab - Transmuted Matter

Stereolab is an Anglo-French band that has been active since 1990. It works in the area between post-rock and indie-pop. Just today, after fifteen years, it released its eleventh album in a row, Instant Holograms on Metal Film. Classic Stereolab sound from the nineties, a melodic utopia, but it is happening now.

ВЕЩЬ – Птеродактиль

Вещь, or Thing in English, is a Russian band from Moscow. At the end of April, they released their sixth album, Passport, on Berlin's Incompetence label. As in their previous albums, they draw on experimental rock history from the Soviet space, punk, and new wave, and theatre. Cabaret and Lene Lovich in one. The selected song is called Pterodactyl.

SUMAC and Moor Mother - Scene 1

Sumac is an American-Canadian post-metal band, and Moor Mother is an Afrofuturist poet. Both are known and recognized in music circles for their virtuosity and collaborations with various artists. The product of their collaboration is the album Film, released last month. In the song Scene 1, fierce guitar riffs, droning ambiance, and assertive voices describe a global reality that is more apocalyptic than we think.

Deerhoof - Ha, Ha Ha, Ha, Haaa

Deerhoof, an American band from San Francisco, has over twenty albums under its belt. They have been making music since 1994, starting with noise punk. Over the years, by reconstructing the sound picture, they have transformed themselves into an area of art rock that is acceptable to the ears and satisfies even almost conventional listeners.
This song is from their latest album, Noble and Godlike in Ruin, released in April.

Greentea Peng - Green

We've heard Grentea Peng, English neo-soul musician and composer, a few times before in #newtunes. She is becoming increasingly charismatic, recognisable, and confident. At the end of March, she released her fifth album, Tell Dem It's Sunny. A mix of R'n'B, neo-soul, hip hop, reggae, and dub extends her hypnotic influence on a growing audience. "Strike while the iron is hot," a Slovenian proverb fits her.

Heavenphetamine - Kemono

Heavenphetamine is a Japanese psychedelic duo from Tokyo, active since 2018 and based in Tbilisi, Georgia for the last years, collaborating with local musicians. The product of the Japanese-Georgian collaboration is the album 冬の太陽が照らす死と真 or The Sun on a Winter Day, which was released this January. Sonically, they move between 60s/70s psychedelic, krautrock, and industrial, with subtle haiku interludes adding a sense of unease about the war in the neighbourhood.

Panda Bear - 50 mg

Noah Lennox, an American living in Portugal and a member of Animal Collective, releases his solo albums under the name Panda Bear. At the end of February, he released his eighth, Sinister Grift. I've mentioned him a few times in #newtunes. Under a backdrop of light, summer indie pop that we'd prefer to listen to on a beautiful beach, lying down with a cold drink in hand, he uses lyrics to tell complex stories about relationships, indifference, and suffering.

Foggy Mountain Spaceship - Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun

Foggy Mountain Spaceship is an American trio from Longmont, Colorado. Vintage psychedelia, yes, this song is a cover of Pink Floyd from 1968. As I read about them, they say they came to Earth with a mission to introduce experimental banjo music to the masses. I have nothing against it.
