Yesterday I wanted nothing more than to write lyrics to a new song, but half the day was full of responsibilities and in between I couldn’t get into the right mindset to write.
So finally at 12:45 I found myself in just the right mood. I resolved to finish the second of three verses, 8 lines. I didn’t expect it to take 3 hours but it did, and so I got to bed late.
(Ironically I have been focused on playing electric guitar these days but the 4 new songs I am working on now are acoustic, once I am done with those, each will get an electric partner)
This is the hardest thing about making art. There are things you can do anytime and there is always SOMETHING you can do to promote a good flow of creative juices, but some things just come when they come. Sometimes somethint comes out and it’s just not ready, like a child born prematurely. Sometimes you need to twist and bend and find just the right shape for the song or the painting or the poem.
I like stuff that just flows and comes out feeling good enough to share. I also like sculpting things to see how good I can make them. I guess this is where I draw the line between a song and a jam. A jam just comes out. A song is meticulously sculpted. Both are great.
I could jam every day and sometimes I do for weeks at a time. And the more I jam, the more I want to sculpt a song, and the more I sculpt a song, the more I want to jam.
And sometimes I want to experiment to find new sounds too, or new feelings from video editing.
Today I found this jam on my phone. I don’t remember recording it….I have no idea where it comes from, but its clearly me playing guitar so it must have happened and since it has distortion, it must be from the past 3 months. It says it was made one month ago. Check out 😆.
I had just gotten back to Tokyo 4 days earlier and was probably feeling the desire to play on stage again after 3 days of live music.
One of my biggest issues with electric guitar so far is getting a sound that is full but not muffled. I want to use fuzz and distortion but I want the notes to be clear too. I am sure there is some kind of method to it, and as I keep playing I will figure it out more and more.
It’s moments like this when I realize that the pursuit of a craft is endless, and that each creation or experiment is a step on a path that never ends.
I have a lot of jamming footage so let me know if you think it’s worth sharing these.
Description from the video:
It’s only been a few months since I started playing electric guitar. 12 or so years on and off acoustic, I had always intended on making music with other instruments, but never had the time, money, focus, or maybe just confidence.
Finally picked up a few effects, a looper, a delay, a reverb and because I didn’t know the difference between fuzz, distortion, and overdrive, and I thought it would be good to get used to lots of different sounds, a Zoom GX24 multi effect pedal.
I can’t remember which settings I had on for this, but I think it was just the zoom with a single loop in the background.
