Hello, friends! I hope you are all doing well! Today I want to share with you an illustration that I put a lot of heart into. “There is a topic that I can't talk about much, but everyone knows about it, and if I talk about it, they'll put me in jail,” haha. Even so, I want to make a little drawing with reference to Venezuela and one of its most iconic products, Harina Pan, which is used to make Arepas. Let's explain each point, as there are several. What is an arepa? By now, I think many of you have heard of arepas, but for those who don't know, they are a traditional dish in Venezuelan cuisine, made from corn flour. There is a deep and eternal debate about where arepas come from. “I don't want to get into that controversy haha,” but in my opinion, arepas now belong to everyone :"3 The characters here are Ocean Healer and Fal, with a strong reference to the character Harina Pan. And many will ask, “What the heck is Harina Pan?” Although arepas have existed since before the creation of Venezuela as such, in the 1960s the product Harina Pan was launched, created by Luis Caballero Mejías. The iconic figure of the Harina Pan woman was designed by Bulgarian artist Marko Markoff, who used the dancer Carmen Miranda as a reference. “Remember that name, I'll give you a fun fact later.” Knowing all this, I wanted to make my own version, but using the character Ocean Healer, since I think she's the one who most resembles Carmen Miranda. Although this illustration is somewhat unusual and heavily laden with references, I wanted to create a fusion and give free rein to my creativity.

Holo amigos! Espero estén muy bien! Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una ilustración a la cual le puse mucho corazón "hay un tema del cual no puedo hablar mucho, pero todos saben pero si hablo de él me meten preso" jaja. aun así quiero hacer un pequeño dibujo con referencia a Venezuela y uno de sus productos mas icónicos, Harina pan con el cual se hace la Arepa. Vamos a explicar cada punto, pues son varios. ¿Que es la arepa? A estas alturas creo muchos han escuchado sobre la arepa, pero vamos a explicar para los que no la conocen es un plato tradicional de la gastronomía venezolana, a base de harina de maiz. Hay un profundo y eterno debate sobre de donde es la arepa. "no quiero entrar en esa polémica jaja" pero a mi parecer la arepa Ahora es de todos :"3 El personaje de aqui es Ocean Healer y Fal, con una fuerte referencia al personaje de Harina pan. Y muchos se preguntarán "¿Qué rayos es harina pan?" A pesar de que la arepa existe desde antes de la creación de Venezuela como tal, en los años de 1960 se lanza el producto Harina Pan, creado por Luis Caballero Mejías. la icónica figura de la mujer de Harina Pan fue diseñada por el artista búlgaro Marko Markoff y uso como referencia a ka bailarina Carmen Miranda. " recuerden ese nombre mas adelante dare un dato curioso" Sabiendo todo esto quise hacer una versión propia pero usando al personaje ocean healer ya que creo que de todos los personajes es la que tiene mas parecido con Carmen Miranda. Aunque esta ilustración es un tanto fuera de lo común y por mucho muy cargada de referencias, quise hacer una fusión y dar rienda suelta a la creatividad.

Process/Proceso

As I was saying, this idea evolved as I was creating it; I could say it was a work in progress. I made the shape of the character, and when I made the sketch, I added more things, like the arepa and Fal on his shoulder. I thought about adding Chirple because he looks more like a parrot. But this was the idea that won out in my mind, haha. Once the sketch was ready, we did the line art in black. I don't know why it took me longer than I thought it would.

Como les decía esta idea fue evolucionando a medida que la iba creando, podría decir que fue sobre la marcha. hice la forma del personaje y al momento de hacer el boceto agregue mas cosas, como la arepa y a Fal en su hombro. Pensé en agregar a chirple pues tiene mas parecido con los loros. pero esta fue la idea que gano en mi mente jaja. Una vez listo el boceto hacemos el lineart en color negro, no se porque me llevo mas tiempo del que pense.

We added the base color. Originally, I wanted to make a neutral blue background without much detail, but as I added the character's colors, I wondered how it would look with the flag... and then how it would look as the new cover for the flour. I was thinking about which version I should keep, and in the end, I developed both.

Agregamos el color base, originalmente quería hacer un fondo azul neutro sin mucho detalle pero a medida que agregue los colores del personaje, dije que tal se veria con la bandera... y luego que tal se vería como si fuera la nueva portada de la harina, estuve pensando cuál versión debería dejar al final desarrolle las dos.

We apply the details to the skin and then blend them in. In areas where strong light hits, we apply an orange tone and blend it in. When we finish the skin, I retouch some areas where I want a more solid tone. Here we can see how I did it until I finished the entire skin area.

Aplicamos los detalles a la piel y luego difuminamos, en las zonas donde entra la luz fuerte aplicamos un tono naranja y difuminamos. al terminar la piel volví a retocar algunas zonas donde quería un tono más sólido. Aqui podemos apreciar la forma en la cual lo hice hasta terminar toda la parte de la piel.

We applied the details to the clothing in the same way, with the difference that here we drew each white dot by hand. I had a brush that makes these patterns, but I couldn't get it to work, and besides, it gives a flat result instead of adjusting to the relief of the clothing or character. The scarf underwent a similar process... and when I finished, I had to adjust each dot because they didn't look right if I left them the same color. In other words, in some areas, the dots have two different shades, or “shadows.”

De igual forma aplicamos los detalles a la ropa, con la diferencia que aqui dibujamos cada punto blanco a mano, tenía un pincel que hace estos patrones pero no lo conseguía y aparte da un resultado plano en lugar de ajustarse al relieve de la ropa o personaje. la pañoleta tuvo un proceso similar... y si al terminar debí ajustar cada punto, pues no se ven bien si los dejo de un mismo color, es decir en algunas zonas los puntos tienen dos tonos diferentes "sombras"

The arepa. Oh, the arepa! My beloved arepa. Traditionally, they were grilled and cooked on a griddle, which leaves certain burn marks. I wanted to recreate this by adding details. We add details to the character's hair and apply the dark strands at the front. We're almost done. Just a few details left, and all the details on Fal.

La arepa OH, la arepa! Mi querida arepa. tradicionalmente, se hacían a la parrilla y en plancha, lo que deja ciertas marcas de quemadura, quise recrear esto al darle detalles. Damos detalles al cabello del personaje y aplicamos los mechones oscuros del frente. Casi terminamos faltan detalles y todos los detalles en Fal.

We added the final details, some background noise, and a little more similarity in the background to emulate flour packaging. And this was the result.

Aplicamos los detalles finales, algo de ruido en el fondo, y un poco mas de similitud en el fondo que emula el empaque de harina. y este fue el resultado!

Quise hacer algo fuera del lore de holozing para variar un poco. y esta me pareció una bonita idea. Amigos recuerden mientras mas oscura la noche mas cerca está el amanecer "proverbio africano".
