Hark I just checked my emails, texts messages and social media I was inundated with invitations To events like baptisms, weddings, and funerals I think I’ll attend one of each Just to try to keep some balance and perspective If such a thing is even possible Birth, and marriage, and death are all interchangeable At least that’s what I was told I saw on it on a TV show Or maybe it was all in my head
Hark Do your joints creak and groan when you get out of bed About to snap like an elastic that’s been stretched out too far We’re all stretched out too far From time to time Do your eyes have to adjust to the dark like they adjust to the light? Are you at your brightest in the night and darkest in the daytime? Darkness and light are interchangeable Neither one is favourable If you’re blinded by both I think it’s all in your head
Hark Please pay attention to what I say I’m the voice of reason, in a reasonless world And no I don’t believe that but I have to tell myself anyway Truth and lies are interchangeable Depending on your point of view What is truthful to me might be a lie to you You discovered your own truth many years ago And it left me behind while I was still lying to everyone Looking in the mirror each day I’d lie to my own weathered and worn down face
Hark I’ve finally attended all the baptisms, weddings and funerals I am so damn confused I couldn’t tell them apart (interchangeable) Because birth leads to marriage, marriage leads to death And marriage leads to birth, and birth leads to death What a vicious circle I’m not sure who to congratulate and who to console I guess that one day I’ll know One day when I’m finally old and can go on no more Maybe I’ll hear it on a TV show
