❄️ A Winter Hike Along the Emmentaler Alps

Last weekend I set out on my first snowshoe tour in this winter season. At least that was the plan. I ended up carrying my snowshoes the whole hike as an extra luggage attached to my backpack. While the weather was fantastic, the snow conditions were such that I could make distance much more effectively with my normal hiking boots.

Since I could progress easier I was able to extend the planned loop by a few kilometers. This allowed me to hike a good piece beyond the terrain which I'm already familiar with from previous tours and thus collect a few new impressions.

I must say I'm quite satisfied with the photographic yield, especially since I took pictures only in a few places. On such a tour taking a photo means to always drop out of the hiking rhythm. It's ramming the poles into the snow (most of time they fall over anyway), taking off gloves, pulling out the phone and reduce breathing like a biathlete before shooting. Not to mention the fogged sun glasses each time after going through this exercise. Nevertheless, I think it was all worth it.

Starting point of my hike was the village Sörenberg, in the south of the Emmentaler Alps. Landmark mountain in that valley is the Brienzer Rothorn. You will get a glimpse of its 2350m high peak in one of the photos below. It is the highest peak in the Swiss canton of Lucerne.

So follow me in the Emmentaler Alps and enjoy the frosty winter sceneries.

soerenberg-16.jpg Starting in early morning silence. The sun is coming just over the ridge and the sky promises great weather for today.

soerenberg-9.jpg With temperatures well below zero, the trees keep their white cover even in the sun.

soerenberg-13.jpg No snow has fallen the last couple of days and so the trail could be walked quite easily.

soerenberg-7.jpg Can you see the armored creature hiding in the ancient rock. Maybe something for LMACians to reveal.

soerenberg-8.jpg My favorite shot from this series. Light, shadows, clarity and depth - it's all there.

soerenberg-12.jpg A massive meteor thunders through the sky, dissipating in a glowing tail. Could be something else, though.

soerenberg-6.jpg A few clouds are coming up.

A glimpse on the sunlit Rothorn on the left towards the center.

soerenberg-5.jpg The clouds have now gained the upper hand. What an amazing change of ambience.

The sun became a white dwarf, deprived of all her warming strength.

soerenberg-1.jpg Back at were I set out. Time for a good, warm lunch.

Thanks for following along and see you back next time 👋.
