How to attract Bitcoiners to a social media platform?

  • I often listen to Jack Maller's PodCast MailBag Mondays and as he is a Bitcoin Maximalist, he considers all Altcoins to be unworthy of his time and energy, and while he recognizes the value of innovation, once you develop a native token for your innovation he usually says all bets are off. He typically addresses most altcoins by their less flattering nickname and considers them the root of most bad publicity for bitcoin, cryptocurrency and blockchain in general. I thought it would be interesting to listen to his thoughts and ideas and reverse engineer a social media platform which would be acceptible to him.
  • Based on his widely publicized beliefs about bitcoin I think that he and most Bitcoiners would only be interested in a tokenized, decentralized, social media platform that prioritize their core values of censorship resistance, financial sovereignty, and strong encryption. Additionally, the platform would integrate Bitcoin and the Lightning Network for tipping, payments, and rewards, rather than using a proprietary native token, is crucial. No altcoin rewards for Bitcoiners.

What would Bitcoiners want from their social media platform?

  • I think it would have to start by prioritizing the core characteristics of bitcoin.

Core principles that attract Bitcoiners

Financial Sovereignty and Micropayments:

Bitcoiners are skeptical of centralized institutions that control finances and data. By natively integrating the Lightning Network for tips and micropayments, users are empowered with peer-to-peer, censorship-resistant payments. This removes reliance on platform intermediaries, addressing a key pain point with centralized social media.

Censorship Resistance:

The decentralized nature of the platform, built on open protocols like Nostr or similar architecture, provides resistance to centralized censorship. This aligns with the Bitcoiner ethos of free speech and the belief that no single entity should control the public's discourse.

True Digital Ownership:

The platform should give users true ownership of their content and identity through cryptographic keys, rather than granting temporary permissions like traditional platforms. This aligns with the self-sovereignty that Bitcoin enables for money. For example, the Nostr protocol allows users to take their identity and followers to any "client" built on the protocol, giving them control over their social graph.

Strong Encryption and Privacy:

Robust, end-to-end encryption for direct messaging would resonate with Bitcoiners who prioritize digital privacy. This principle is a natural extension of the cryptographic security that underpins Bitcoin itself.

Transparency and Open Source:

Like Bitcoin, the platform's protocol should be open-source and transparent. This allows users to verify how the system works, fostering trust within a community that values provable mechanisms over promises.

A tokenized system designed for Bitcoiners

  • To make a tokenized system appealing to Bitcoiners, it must be carefully designed to avoid creating an "altcoin" that dilutes Bitcoin's value proposition. Instead of a new token, the platform should leverage the Bitcoin ecosystem itself.

Bitcoin as the "Token":

The platform should not have its own native token for rewarding users. Instead, it should use Bitcoin (BTC) via the Lightning Network. Any "tokenization" would be a representation of content on-chain, with value denominated and exchanged in BTC.

Lightning-Based Monetization:

Direct Tipping:

Users can send instant BTC tips directly to their favorite creators. This model is already popular with Bitcoiners on Nostr.

Content "Collectibles":

Content could be "tokenized" as non-fungible digital assets, but the value is denominated in BTC rather than a new project-specific cryptocurrency.

Paid Content:

The platform could enable seamless pay-per-view or subscription services for content using Lightning Network payments.

Governance via Proof-of-Work (PoW):

A governance model could be created where platform administrators are required to post a small, verifiable PoW to propose changes. This aligns with Bitcoin's mechanism for achieving consensus and prevents spam without relying on a centralized authority or a new token.

Why I think this this approach works for bitcoiners

  • While many decentralized social media platforms offer tokens, most have struggled to gain traction with Bitcoiners because they create a complex, speculative token economy that maximalists often view as unnecessary and insecure.
  • The platform I propose would work because this platform's approach would succeed by: Leveraging Existing Infrastructure: It utilizes Bitcoin and the Lightning Network, which Bitcoiners already use and trust. Respecting Core Principles: The design is an extension of Bitcoin's values, not a competitor to them. Providing a Purely P2P Experience: The financial incentives are between users, not between a user and a platform. The platform is merely the technology stack that facilitates the interaction.
