From Dolphin to Orca
I suddenly realized today, that I was getting close to 50,000 Hive Power and I was excited. I was excited not just because of the number 50,000 but also because I suddenly realized I was now within striking distance of Orca Status; the rank below Whale status.
I have been grinding for a while, trading, selling, buying and publishing articles daily. I always thought it would be nice to make it to Orca level, but never thought it was reallu possible.
*I was very happy to make it to Dolphin status, and considered the next rank to be to far out of reach. But now that I can see 50k in the distance, I am pinching myself a bit to insure it is real.
I sold a big chunk of one of my Hive-Engine tokens when it suddenly increased in price 10x and I thought I must tale advantage of the opportunity to sell something I have been accumulating for 4 years.
I am proud of myself for perservering with that token, and even prouder that I didn't invest my profits in another Hive-Engine token, but instead decided to buy Hive and HBD. The HBD should generate income, which i can use to buy Hive and the Powered up Hive allows me to earn more Hive and stack hive Power faster.
Now that I am 80% to my goal of Orca, I thought I would revist the Orca ranking and see exactly what I need to achieve Hive Power wise to get there.
How much Hive Power do I need to be an Orca?
Definition:
To be considered an "Orca" on the Hive blockchain, I always thought I needed to have more than 50,000 Hive Power (HP). BUT ... I am currently researching this number because I see some accounts with 50,000 HivePower who still have a Dolphin badge!! And I have seen in some comments that it depends on the number of vests you have, not Hive Power, and whether your number of vests make you an orca or a dolphine may be related to Hive Price?? So.. it's complicated/
I need to do more research, because it seems once you go down a rabbit hole of research you find more questions then answers. I skimmed the Hive White Paper and couldn't find it, so I am still looking. Anyone who reads this and finds a reliable reference please put it in the comments below.
So I may have to adjust my number to 60,000 hivepower but for now, I will just enjoy the euphoria of being close to 50,000 Hive Power, and pray that I continue to provide value and be rewarded.
This ranking system, like other crypto community tiers, is not an official rule but rather a common designation used to categorize account sizes and influence.
Here's a breakdown of the generally accepted Hive Power ranks:
Plankton: Less than 500 HP
Minnow: 500 to 5,000 HP
Dolphin: 5,000 to 50,000 HP
Orca: more then 50,000 to 500,000 HP
Whale: More than 500,000 HP
What is Hive Power?
Hive Power represents the amount of staked HIVE tokens you hold. By "powering up" your HIVE into HP, you increase your influence and gain the ability to participate in various on-chain activities, such as:
Curating Content: Voting on posts and comments, which influences the rewards they receive. The more HP you have, the more your vote is worth.
Governance: Electing witnesses who are responsible for producing blocks and securing the blockchain.
Resource Credits (RC): Your HP determines your RC, which are used to pay for network transactions like posting, commenting, and voting.
How to reach Orca status
Reaching Orca status requires a significant investment of HIVE tokens.
Here are the main ways to acquire more Hive Power:
Buy HIVE: Purchase HIVE on a cryptocurrency exchange and transfer it to your wallet. Power Up: Stake your HIVE in your wallet to convert it to Hive Power. Earn Rewards: Create and curate content on Hive-based social platforms. A portion of the rewards you earn will be paid out as Hive Power. The more Hive Power I power up, the larger my curation rewards are, which is cool and my author rewards are also growing slowly as I am attracting more Orca level curators, as my Hive stack reaches near Orca level.
This kind of social and economic hierarchy is just one interesting aspect of decentralized finance.
