Even when I watched the very first episode, I got a feeling I was holding something very fragile, such as a glass and I did not want to break it. It is a sad, beautiful, and hopeful place of Violet. Every moment is neatly painted with feelings. The animation is magnificent, the music is powerful and the story is memorable. It is an anime that makes you stop and take into consideration what life is, what love is and what we will never often say. It is profound and simple and it goes deep.
Story Summary and My Review
Violet Evergarden begins with a girl who did not know anything other than war. She was brought up a soldier, one who was used to unquestioningly obeying orders. She did not quite know how to respond to feelings, how to act like a regular child. She was a weapon to most people. Life to her was just survival.
She had one person who treated her otherwise though Major Gilbert. He named her, took care of her and was her best approximation to a family. During the thick of war he mumbled something Violet could not make out: I love you. And after that he was gone and left her a drag and lost.
On the end of the war Violet finds it hard to adjust to the life. She is physically hurt, as well as hurt in her heart. That is when she finds a new position in society. She turns into an Auto Memory Doll, who writes publications on behalf of people. These letters do not only consist of words these are the deepest feelings people want to come out with.
It is awkward at first. Violet herself does not experience emotions, but she is supposed to express them in writing to other people. However, gradually through her clients she starts picking up.
The episodes are small stories and yet they are carried with weight. Before she dies, a mother has been writing birthday letters to her daughter. A soldier passes his last few words home before a fatal battle on the army frontier line on the battlefield. A playwright fights to finish a narrative to his lost child. All of the clients have an effect on Violet in various ways and as a result, she matures.
That is what makes the anime beautiful Not one huge plot, but a number of small stories that are united by the feeling. All the episodes sound like letters to the viewer.
I loved the aftermath of Gilberts saying to Violet that she will one day find out what he means and Violet gets it finally. A typewriter is the sound Violet hears as she writes the letters: it is the rhythm of her development. The world colors her moods. When there is nothing inside of her, it is a cold world. As she starts to feel love, and love and hope, the world becomes warm and bright. It is as though as you can watch her feelings expressing themselves in colors.

We all experience periods of confusion, brokenness and doubts over whom and where we belong in the world. Seeing Violet develop, evolve and create meaning through pain, I was able to acquire hope that even after we are broken, we can fix ourselves.
