I've been picking up circulating Mexican coins occasionally (other than my favorite first-year issue of the Libertad and modern bullion coin Libertad).
It's been a while since I last featured Mexican coins, and @thebighigg featured several of his Mexican coins last month, so I thought I'd chime in!
1968 Mexico Silver 25 Pesos Olympics
This is a crown-sized commemorative coin minted to celebrate the 19th Summer Olympics in Mexico in 1968.
The engraver and designer of the reverse of this coin is Lorenzo Rafael. It depicts an Aztec ball player above the Olympic rings. The rings symbolize the union of the five continents: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.
The 19th Olympic Games were indeed held in Mexico City, Mexico, from October 12 to October 27, 1968. This event marked the first time the Olympics were staged in Latin America and the first in a Spanish-speaking country. The Games were also significant for their political context, with the Tlatelolco massacre occurring just ten days before the opening ceremony, highlighting the political tensions in the country. The high altitude of Mexico City, at 2,240 meters above sea level, had a notable impact on athletic performances, with many world records being set during the Games. Source
The edge of the coin is incused with INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD which is Latin for "Independence and Liberty".
The obverse has the coat of arms of Mexico, the denomination of 25 Pesos and the silver content of 0.720. Yes, the 1968 Mexico 25 Pesos is silver and it celebrates Mexico hosting the Olympics for the first time.
People actually love this coin for its design and for the memory it carries.
You're not just holding silver, you're holding a story.
And that makes it pretty special.
