I bought this coin more than a year ago.
It is a tiny bronze coin, about the size of 1/10 American Gold Eagle. I had difficulty finding it among the coins I have, and it took me three times the time to look for the photos I took of it when I first got it.
It's a coin that doesn't look spectacular at first glance- just a beat-up tiny bronze coin— but it is loaded with history!
This coin was struck during the reign of Alexander Jannaeus, who ruled Judaea 2,000 years ago. He was the first in the Hasmonaean dynasty to produce coins.
I ask Copilot more this coin:
Biblical Connection These coins are believed to be the type referenced in the New Testament story of the Widow’s Offering (Mark 12:41–44, Luke 21:1–4), where a poor widow donates two small coins to the Temple treasury. The story emphasizes sacrificial giving, and the coin’s modest value underscores the widow’s profound generosity.
Circulation and Legacy Though minted decades before Jesus’s birth, these coins remained in circulation during his lifetime, making them a tangible link to the historical and spiritual landscape of the era. Their crude appearance and small size—often no larger than a pencil eraser—reflect their use in everyday transactions, especially among the poor.
Cultural Significance Today, Widow’s Mite coins are cherished by collectors and historians alike for their biblical resonance, archaeological authenticity, and symbolic depth. They serve as a poignant reminder of faith, humility, and the enduring power of small acts of devotion.
This post is for @elizbethbit! She possesses a Widow's Mite, which I suspect is far better than what I have.
