Rainbow Falls is one of several waterfalls along the Wailuku River in Hilo. Waianuenue Falls is Hawaiian for "rainbow seen in water." It is located in the Wailuku River State Park.
The hike to the top of Rainbow Falls is beautiful! As you ascend, you pass lush foliage.
... and lots of massive banyan trees. This tree has many aerial prop roots growing down into the soil, giving the impression that it has multiple trunks.
WHY RAINBOW FALLS? Rainbows can be seen when standing with your back to the sun. The water droplets in are formed by all of the small water droplets in the mist that surrounds the falling water, rather than by rain. The main viewing spot for the rainbow falls is east of the falls So if you want to see rainbows while looking at the falls, you must go early in the morning.
The Rainbow Falls cascade 80 ft over a lava cave.
The volume of the Rainbow Falls changes on a daily basis. After a decent rain, the falls appear like this.
It is specially beautiful when there is a lot of water flowing in the waterfall, but even if the falls are reduced to a trickle, you still can view the rainbows.
